Historic Districts Commission
Commissioners in attendance: Ian Adamson, Mark DiNapoli, Joann Gschwendtner, and Stephen
Politi; Associate Commissioners: Elaine Doran (arrived at 7:50 p.m.).
The minutes of July 1, 1999 and August 5, 1999 were approved.
PETITIONS HEARD:
39 Bedford Street — Gulf Gas Station — Ronald LaPointe received approval for a 10'x4' lit gulf
sign with pump prices to be installed between the 1 and 2 garage bays. Certificate No. 99C-

1713 Mass. Avenue — Lawrence Pelavin received approval for a rear sign only. A front
projecting sign was not approved. Certificate No. 99C -57
9 Tavern Lane — Amelia and Jacob Bergmann received approval to demolish existing screen
porch and replace with windowed room 14 -1/2' x 14'. Certificate No. 99C -58
31 Hancock Street — Faith Baum, representing Marc and Caroline Bohn, presented plans and
received approval to remove one chimney in rear and change a few windows, a door and exterior
light fixture. Also received approval to have a playset in the yard for a period of 10 years.
(Adamson did not participate in this hearing) Certificate No. 99C -59
45 -47 Waltham Street — Rick Bechtel, representing Guardian Savings, presented plans for
updating the building. The windows, doors and skylight were approved. Continued to next
month for additional detailed information. Certificate No. 99C -60
72 Waltham Street — Kim and Eric Zanin received approval for house and trim color change.
Also received approval to have a playset in the yard for a 10 year period. Certificate No. 99C -61
1707 Mass. Avenue - Krikor Papazian asked for permission to put up an awning. Permission
was denied. Commission felt building did not warrant awning.
14 Muzzey Street — Raychel Greenwald from Lexington Signs & Grafix, representing Tracy
Patterson, Orthodontics, received approval for a wooden sign and hanger. Certificate No. 99C-

36 Bedford Street — Rick Bechtel and Tom Scott, representing Stop & Shop, received approval
for a Bank Boston sign with logo and a "Welcome to Stop & Shop" sign. Also received
approval for temporary parking lot lights until permanent ones arrive. Certificate No. 99C -63

CONTINUED HEARINGS:
1998 Massachusetts Avenue — Doug Hobbs received approval of Authentic Roof recycled
imitation slate roofing, arbor and gate, south west overhang brackets to match northern side,
addition of dormer on southern face. Hearing was closed. Certificate No. 99C -55
7 Bedford Street — Julie Schauman did not show.
6 -8 Wallis Court — Dan Rapperport received approval for 2 additional windows on 2 11a floor over
each entry, skylights side by side on south side, addition of railings and balusters. Certificate
No. 99C -64.
INFORMAL HEARINGS
870 Mass. Avenue— Laura Herlihy discussed changes she wants to make on the home.
Commission suggested checking library for books on period homes. Does not need HDC
approval for repair work. Ms. Herlihy will come for formal hearing to get approval for playset
and door color change.
8 Curve Street — Joe Hunt was looking for guidance on adding a garage /breezeway to existing
house. Commission suggested being consistent with existing house. Mr. Hunt's architect will
contact Commissioner DeNapoli.
Matt Hakala, the new Zoning Officer attended the meeting and met the Commissioners.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:50 p.m.
