PETITIONS HEARD:
Town of Lexington
Historic Districts Commission
1912 Massachusetts Avenue — Hancock Church — William Erickson received approval for
reconstructing two existing concrete walkways and the addition of some exterior stairs to the
front of the church. Certificate No. 99C -50
Battle Green/Harrington Road — The Town of Lexington received approval to install a temporary
experimental road and traffic project, which includes curbing, road stripping, signage, and traffic
islands.The Determination is for one year only and the Town will return to the Commission
regularly with updates on experiment. The temporary changes will be removed if required after
one year. Ms. Gschwendtner and Ms. Hopkins will work with the Town on the color for the
asphalt -like brick. (3 -2 Adamson and Gschwendter opposed)
5 Tavern Lane — Usha Thakrar and John Farr received approval for winterizing and expanding a
3- season porch that would increase second floor area and adding two dormers to front of house.

CONTINUED HEARINGS:
32 Hancock Street — (Ian Adamson stepped out for hearing) Faith Baum, representing Rosalind
Wright and Amram Shapiro received approval to demolish existing garage and build addition
and new garage in place of, add iron picket fencing around inside of shrubbery. Shrubbery must
be maintained. Roof will be Authentic Roof imitation recycled slate. Certificate No. 99C -53
Massachusetts Avenue/Hastings Park — Steve Hurley received approval to install 8 teak benches
along Mass. Avenue in Hastings Park after the Patriots Day 2000 celebrations (4 -1
Gschwendtner opposed). Certificate No. 99C -54
1998 Massachusetts Avenue — Doug Hobbs received approval for: 1) use of GAF Stateline
Granite Gray Blend shingles (4 -1 Adamson opposed), 2) fence with gate and arbor moved back
approx. 48 feet from street and old driveway dug up and grass planted, 3) styling and window
change SW corner (4 -1 Hopkins opposed). Action withheld on chain link fence on western side
of house. Meeting continued for more information on gable -roof dormer and slate roof options.

9 Tavern Lane— Molly Bergmann discussed changing screen porch to new room with large
windows. Commission would like to see the new windows match the old with more division.
14 Muzzey Street — Raychel Greenwald from Lexington Signs appeared for orthodontist
regarding new sign. Commission would like sign to be consistent with existing signs of other
businesses at that address.
Cary Hall- Steve Hurley representing the Design Advisory Committee asked for comments
regarding increasing the sidewalk outside Cary Hall and having the pavement and sidewalk at
same height at bottom of steps. Also adding benches and bike racks to front of Cary Hall. The
Commissioners were concerned about taking the parking away from Police Station. Also
concerned about no raised sidewalk at Cary Hall steps. Would like to see bike racks moved out
of view.
Ms. Gschwendtner brought in some samples of a new recycled slate material that "This Old
House" is using for roofs. The Commissioners liked the look of the samples and thought that the
Library might want to consider. Also 1998 Mass. Avenue and 32 Hancock Street are looking
into.
Lynn Hopkins will write up some additional information on penalties for the guidelines.
