PETITIONS HEARD:
HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMIVIISSION
Commissioners in attendance: Ian Adamson, Richard Bechtel, Joann Gschwendtner, and
Stephen Politi; Associate Commissioners: Sara Chase, Elaine Doran, Eleanor MacQueen
1580 Massachusetts Avenue - Two signs which hang from the main sign were approved.
Certificate 98C -38.
Municipal Parking Lot, Depot Square/Edison Way - Peter Chalpin and George Woodbury
presented plans for the parking lot attendant's booth. It was approved, to be placed on an island at
the entrance to the lot. Certificate 98C -39.
55 Waltham Street - (R. Bechtel stepped out during the consideration of this petition.) Bill
Ericson and Jeffrey Lyon explained how space planning issues had lead to proposed exterior
changes. Changes in the doors and windows, residing and painting were approved. The rear
dormer work will be the subject of a continued hearing. Certificate 98C -40.
73 Waltham Street - Brian Brinkers presented plans for a new sign reflecting the change from
Nynex to Bell Atlantic. The Commission expressed a preference for individual letters, as had
originally been used on the building, rather than a one piece sign. The hearing was continued.
1690 Massachusetts Avenue - Karen Mulligan presented a plan to replace the sign in the rear
parking lot of Dccclle's with individual orange plastic letters. The Commission did not care for the
proposal but was not sure that they had jurisdiction over the sign. The applicant will check on
whether it can be seen from a public way. The hearing was continued.
12 Bedford Street - Donald and Lodia Pa sought approval of a color change for their house.
It was approved. Certificate 98C -41.
1444 Massachusetts Avenue - Brian Hackley and Wendy Carter presented plans for a variety of
projects. The commission approved the replacement of the driveway, a new patio, replacing a
stockade fence, rebuilding of the back porch and replacement of cellar windows. The hearing was
continued to allow further consideration of the front walk Certificate 98C -42.
1628 Massachusetts Avenue - Kevin Fraser requested two signs to be mounted on the sides of the
bay at his store Pet Mania. These would replace the existing sign hanging on the porch. The
Commission members suggested using the existing sign, hanging from a bracket to give him the
visibility he wants. Hearing was continued.

3 Wallis Court -,Joel Greenstein requested a certificate to replace the clapboards that no longer
hold paint. Two shutters will be added to the front, second floor. The Commission approved the
plans. Certificate 98C -43.
60 Forest Street - Fred Wolf presented plans to add a shed dormer at the rear of the house,
relocating skylights to its roof. The Commission approved the dormer. He will return with
specifications for door and window replacements. The hearing was continued. Certificate 98C -44.
10 Woburn Street - Brian Moore of Geologic Services Corporation, on behalf of Exxon
Company sought approval of a remediation shed to be Located on the sitc of the Gingerbread
Construction Company. The Commission approved the brick shed with emergency sgnage.

39 Bedford Street - Wendy Regan and Alan Durista represented Cumberland Farms, Inc. /Gulf
Oil . They will be replacing the tanks by the end of the year and want to replace the pump island
and install a canopy over the pumps with a fire suppression system. The plans were approved.
Certificate 98C -46.
46 Bedford Street - Mr. Micazizzi called to request a postponement of his hearing.
6 Meriam Street - Donald Burke represented the Church of Our Redeemer which requested two
signs. The signs were approved. Certificate 98C -47.
7 Raymond Street - Eve Horwitz sought a change in the colors that had been approved at the
March and April meetings. The new color scheme was approved. Certificate 98C -48.
2045 Massachusetts Avenue - Jane Attanucci received approval of a new roof as well as a color
change. Certificate 98C -49.
36 Bedford Street - This hearing had been continued from the April meeting. The outstanding
issues in the expansion and renovation of the Stop and Shop were presented. Exterior materials,
windows, lighting, benches, trash receptacles and planters were approved. Signage will be part of a
continued hearing. Certificate 98C -50.
Massachusetts Avenue /Lexington Center - David Williams presented for approval six more sites
for whiskey barrel flower planters. They will be placed at 1709, 1751, 1761, 1787, 1781 and 1775
Massachusetts Avenue. Certificate 98C -51.

34 Hancock Street - (R. Bechtel stepped out during this Bearing) Bruce McCarthy presented
landscape and architectural clianges which are part of the ongoing renovation of the property.
The Commission approved a stone wall on the house side of the driveway, removal of a chimney,
the enclosure of a vent in brick, the addition of a concrete pad for air conditioning units that will be
screened by landscaping, and a brick pathway to the front door. Certificate 98C -52.
703 Massachusetts Avenue/Waldorf High School - John Ellis received approval for the demolition
of the one story concrete bock building at the rear of the main building. Certificate 98C -53.
Massachusetts Avenue at Bedford Street and at #1666 - Nancy Kolb, transportation planner for
the Town, sought input on the idca of placing bus transit signs in front of Aesop's Bagels and at the
corner by the Visitor Center. The signs would have information on Lexpress and MBTA routes
and be mounted on existing poles. The Commission felt such signs were not needed, especially in
the Buckinan Tavern area.
