PETITIONS HEARD:
HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION
1874 Massachusetts Avenue - This hearing on the Library addition was continued from the
October 2, 1997 meeting and began at 7:00 p.m. in order to accommodate a thorough discussion
of the issues. Many issues, such as windows, the ramp in front and the mix of colors and materials,
remain to be resolved so the hearing will be continued. Volunteers from the Commission will
contact Walter Pierce to continue the discussion.
794 Massachusetts Avenue - Commissioner Bechtel stepped out for this hearing. Michael Keegan
presented plans for an addition to the rear side which were approved. Certificate 98C -25.
16 Belfry Terrace - Omar Khudari is doing dcicading at this property and will be dipping the
casement windows and will be replacing the rest. The proposal was approved. Certificate 98C -26.
5 Hancock Avenue - The Whitmans presented plans to replace the brick steps and landing with
wood and Trex. Approved. Certificate 98C -27.
36 Bedford Street - Commissioner Bechtel stepped out for this hearing. The team of Tom Fenn,
Jim Silvia, Jerry Frank, Tom Scott, Steve Shirrard, and Frank Stewart presented plans for an
expansion and remodeling of the Stop and Shop store. The Commission felt that the concept was
fine but more refinement was needed. The hearing was continued.
1761 Massachusetts Avenue - Various signs for the BankBoston office were proposed and
approved. Certificate 98C -28.
1666 Massachusetts Avenue — Spaulding Management applied for a sign for Scoops Ice Cream.
It was approved. Certificate 98C -29.
1557, 1661, 1693, 1875 Massachusetts Avenue — George Woodbury presented several plans that
the Town is considering. The Visitor's Center trim will be repainted the same color so no
approval is required. The Boston Edison lot will be enlarged for use during the library
renovation. Work will not begin until the construction of the library is approved. The approval is
good for three years. Certificate 98C -30.
Possible changes to the Fletcher Street lot were shown on an informational basis. Mr.
Woodbury also reported on plans to replace the parking lot attendant shed.

Depot Square — Peter Chalpin reported on possible changes to the Depot Square redesign. The
state may not approve the ramps as previously approved. Any changes will be brought back to
the Commission.
1710, 1720, 1740, 1726, 1764, 1780, 1784, 1899 Massachusetts Avenue - The Commission
approved the application of the Lexington Center Committee for whiskey barrel planters to be
placed in the downtown. Certificate 98C- 31.
1702, 1707, 1755 Massachusetts Avenue and Edison Way — Janet Tiampo presented the
Lexington Center Committee's plan to eventually replace all downtown racks with a black Cora
model. The Commission approved existing bike rakes at Overall Music, Enchantments and the
Battle Green Inn Certificate 98C -32.
1984 Massachusetts Avenue — Cynthia Davidson presented plans for her garden. The four
obelisks were not approved. A stone wall, a gate with arbor and a bench were approved.
Certificate 98C -33.
2045 Massachusetts Avenue — No one showed for this hearing.
1377 Massachusetts Avenue — Carole Stavenhagen received permission to replace the roof of her
house with architectural shingles. Certificate 98C -34.

627 Massachusetts Avenue — A driveway of imbedded crushed stone was approved. Certificate
98C -35.
1299 Massachusetts Avenue — Paint colors were approved. 98C -36.
703 Massachusetts Avenue — No one showed for this hearing.
7 Raymond Street — Paint Colors were approved. 98C -37
34 Hancock Street — No one showed for this hearing.
INFORMAL HEARINGS
856 and 1095 Massachusetts Avenue —Planet Aid came in to discuss the location of clothing
collection bins. The Commission felt these activities might be better located elsewhere.
