Minutes of the October 2, 1997 Meeting
HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION
Commissioners in attendance: Richard Bechtel, Walter Bergler Sarah Chase, Elaine Doran, Mark
DiNapoli, Joann Gschwendtner, Eleanor MacQueen, and Steve Politi
PETITIONS HEARD:
73 Waltham Street - Don Ambrosio and Ellen Davis presented NYNEX's plan to add an
acoustic screen on the roof. The screen was approved. Certificate No. 97C -72.
6 Oak Street - Howard Bernstein presented plans for a replacement garage door. It was suggested
that he explore other options . and the hearing was continued.
1628 Massachusetts Avenue - Kevin Fraser proposed a free - standing sign which would hang on a
metal bracket off a wooden post. He will speak with his landlord about mounting the sign to
project off the building. The hearing was continued.
1605 Massachusetts Avenue - Susan Rockwell was not able to attend but sent in a letter
requesting that the sign presented at the previous month's meeting be approved. It was approved.
The Commission also approved the moving of the directory sign from the Battle Green to the site
in front of Cary Hall. Certificate 97C-73.
1796 Massachusetts - Bob Enik presented a sign for Lexington Hair Styling. The sign was
approved. Certificate No.: 97C-74.
1874 Massachusetts Avenue - Carol Mahoney, Walter Pierce, Stephen Hale and Melissa Bennett
represented the Cary Memorial Library. The general plan was presented. It was agreed that the
Commission would hold a special meeting with the library as the only agenda item. The hearing
was continued.
2 Bloomfield Street - John Withouse is replacing his porch roof. The shingle color was approved.
Certificate No. 97C-75.
CONTINUED HEARINGS:
1646 Massachusetts Avenue - A temporary sign for Paint a Plate Studio was presented by Sharon
Spaulding of Spaulding Management. The sign was approved. Certificate No. 97C-76.
10 Woburn Street - John D'Orsi of the Gingerbread Construction Company presented tables to
be outside the bakery. The Tables were approved. Certificate No. 97C- 77.
1 -7A Meriam Street - James A. Manganello presented plans for the hardware and doors for the
shops. The doors were approved. Certificate No. 97C-78

INFORMAL HEARINGS:
739 Massachusetts Avenue - John Ellis explained expansion plans for the Waldorf School
which would include the acquisition and rehabilitation of two buildings and construction of
a new building connecting the two.
10 Muzey Street - Susan Lapoint the librarian at the Christian Science Reading Room
came to discuss news racks to sell the Christian Science Monitor.
Depot Square /Emery Park - Barbara Lucas brought a mock up of a suggested bus
schedule display.
10 Woburn Street - Brian Moore discussed potential enclosures of remediation
equipment. This is related to the former use of the site by Exxon.
763 & 755 Massachusetts Avenue - Mart Ojamma brought in brick samples that he will be
using to repair the chimneys on the church and the house. The Commission said the
repairs could go ahead without a formal hearing.
