of the
Lexington Historic Districts Commission
Wednesday 6 February 1991
A meeting of the Lexington Historic Districts Commission was held on
Wednesday, February 6, 1991 in the Selectmen's Meeting Room of the Town
Office Building, Lexington, Massachusetts
Present at the meeting were Commissioners Stephen M Politi , Chairman;
John L Davies; Linda J McAulay; John E Ryan; Associate Commissioners Mary
Harding Nye; Elizabeth B Cotten; and Charles D Grant, Clerk
At 8 00 PM the Chairman declared the meeting open and read the notice on
the application of Eddie's of Lexington, Inc with respect to exterior
architectural changes to the building at 20 Waltham Street, which is within
the Battle Green District On behalf of Nancy and Eddie Jigarjian, who were
also present at the meeting, Robert Hillson and Priscilla Ryder of Cityside
Management made a presentation of a proposed new restaurant with a family
orientation and an Italian menu The exterior changes include colors (earth
tones orange, red, dark green, and dark mustard) ; an awning; lighting, to
shine on the awning; and a sign in the form of a three-dimensional red pepper
5'-6" tall The discussion about the proposed sign, which revolved mainly
around the red pepper, was summarized by Commissionmer Davies who said that
• the building is a difficult one to work with; it needs a projecting sign, so
it can be seen from Massachusetts Avenues, and a design that protects the
building The proposed design overwhelms the building, moreover, the awning
covers the architectural feature of the horizontal fascia In short, the
design has to be scaled to the building The lighting, he felt, is
appropriate The Chairman proposed that the hearing be continued at the next
meeting, at which time the applicants should return with two proposals, one
sign composed of a smaller red pepper, and a second sign using the logo that
the members found quite acceptable
At 8 30 PM the Commission heard an informal presentation by Lewis and
Constance Counts on proposed external architectural changes to their house at
8 Hancock Avenue, which is in the Hancock-Clarke District They showed
photographs and drawings of their plans to remodel the kitchen of their
Federal style house and to add a deck measuring 10' X 15' The proposed
changes drew favorable comments from the members Commissioner Davies noted
that the windowsill are heights high in the kitchen and should be reviewed,
9 9
from the point of view of both outside appearance and interior feeling The
Counts plan to return before the Commission for a formal hearing during the
meeting of March 6
At 8 50 PM in a continued hearing, Patricia Reichheld and Patricia Folly
presented a revised plan for an awning on the building at 14 Muzzey Street,
which is within the Battle Green District It was VOTED unanimously to
approve the proposed awning as presented
• The Chairman presented the Commission with a copy of the "State Register
