MINUTES OF MEETING
of the
Lexington Historic Districts Commission
Wednesday 4 April 1990
A meeting of the Lexington Historic Districts Commission was held on
Wednesday, April 4, 1990 in Room G-15 of the Town Office Building, Lexington,
Massachusetts.
Present at the meeting were Commissioners John L. Davies, Chairman;
Stephen M. Politi; Associate Commissioners Walter H. Bergler; Elizabeth B.
Cotten; and Mary Harding Nye; in the absence of the Clerk of the Commission,
Commissioner Bergler recorded the minutes.
At 8:00 PM the Chairman declared the meeting open and read an
application from Elaine Crandall d/b /a Montage of Lexington with respect to
the erection and display of signs on the building at 1707 Massachusetts
Avenue, which is within the Battle Green District. It was VOTED unanimously
that the sign on the parking lot side be approved as presented, measuring
18" X 54 ", with a white background to match the building panel, grey letters
with black outline, and background of teal green. A decision on an oval sign
to hang in the archway of the building was deferred.
The next hearing concerned an application from Anthony and Peter
Bongiorno d/b /a Craft Cleaners with respect to the erection and display of
signs on the same building at 1707 Massachusetts Avenue. It was VOTED
unanimously that the flat signs be approved as presented, measuring
28" X 28 ", with gold leaf letters, a background logo in blue (Benjamin Moore
#840) and no border. A similar sign on the parking lot side of the building,
which could be 24" X 24" or 28" X 28 ", whichever looks most suitable, was
approved. Placing the street number, 1707, with the bottom of the numbers to
be even with the fascia board, was also approved. The subject of hanging
signs on the building was discussed and a decision deferred to a later
meeting.
The third scheduled applicant, Carter Scott d/b /a Transformations at 627
Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the East Village District, was not able
to attend the meeting.
In the next hearing, Giovanna Egiz d/b /a Cose Belle Ltd presented an
application with respect to the erection and display of a sign on the
building at 15 Waltham Street, which is within the Battle Green District. It
was VOTED unanimously that the sign, having black letters on a white
background, be approved as submitted.
Roger and Mary Hill then made an informal presentation with respect to
the installation of a children's play structure and a brick walk on the
premises at 9 Hancock Street, which is within the Battle Green District. The
Commission approved the new 30" wide brick walk and the relocation of the
"jungle gym" to the site currently occupied by the vegetable garden (and the
relocation of the vegetable garden to the place where the structure is now).

Arthur S. Ryan then made an informal presentation concerning exterior
architectural changes to the building and on the premises at 531 -529
Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the East Village District. The
Commission approved the replacement of clapboard siding and deferred approval
of the other proposed changes until the next meeting.
Hans Berkhout d/b /a LeBellecour Restaurant then made an informal
presentation concerning proposed exterior architectural changes to the
building at 10 Muzzey Street, which is within the Battle Green District. The
Commission was favorable to the plans but deferred formal approval until the
next meeting.
Carla Fortmann d/b /a The Crafty Yankee then made an informal
presentation concerning exterior architectural changes to the building at
1840 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle Green District. The
Commission was favorable to the plans but deferred formal approval until the
next meeting.
Regarding a communication from Mary Costello Marker d/b /a Florascopes at
1970 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle Green District, the
Chairman reported that he had talked with Mrs Marker and explained that the
substitution of antique doors and glass transoms in lieu of the reproduction
doors originally called for was within the scope of the certificate already
voted.
On the issue of the unapproved signs in Lexington, the Chairman reported
he is endeavoring to find out who put them up.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:00 PM.
