HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION
July 18, 1989
A meeting of the Historic Districts Commission was held on Wednesday, July
18, 1984, in the Selectmen's Meeting Room, Town Office Building, Lexington. Present
were Commissioners John L. Davies, Chair; John E. Ryan and Ann Wallace, and Associate
Commissioner Albert T. Pitt. Due to illness, there was no quorum present.
At 8:15 PM, David Gaynor appeared on behalf of American Health Care, Inc. to
request approval of a sign at 35 Bedford Street. The sign would read "CARE ONE
DOCTORS (green cross logo) 8 AM -9PM MONDAY -SATURDAY". It would be 9 ft.
high by 4 ft. wide, with bronze incised letters and cross on a white background.
There was considerable discussion about the height of the sign, and Mr. Davies
said there was no scale drawing showing the exact dimensions and lettering of the
proposal. The hearing was adjourned to July 25th, 1984, at which time there was
expected to be a quorum and the applicant could have more complete and/or revised
information on the proposed sign.
At 8:40 PM, Patricia Church and Denise Cote appeared onbehalf of Church and
Cote, Jewelers with regard to proposed signs at 17 Depot Square. One sign, using
the former "Village Artisans" backboard would read "Church & Cote Jewelers" over
the door, with 7" letters on a 6'x 23~" backboard. The second sign, over the
window, using 5" letters would read the same. The backboards would be eggshell
in color, matching the building trim, and the letters would be in maroon. There
was discussion about the size and proportion of the letters, and the hearing was
adjourned to July 25th, 1984.
At 9:00 PM, WilliamJ. and Mildred Freeman of 1505 Massachusetts Avenue,
together with Jack Simon, appeared with respect to the addition of a solar bay
to the unit at 2 Russell Square. The unit would be as manufactured and installed
by Sunset Design, represented at the hearing by Mr. Matthew St. Ange. The addi-
tion would have a roof, siding and paint to match the existing. There was dis-
cussion of the end window which follows the curve of the arched framing members,
and Mr. St. Ange explained that there was no feasible alternative to achieve
ventilation at the end wall. Following this discussion, there was general approval
of the design, and the hearing was adjourned to July 25, 1984.
At approximately 9:20 PM, Emanuel Corcia appeared for an informal discussion
of a proposed handicapped entrance to Carey Hall. The design was generally
approved, pending presentation of a final design.
At approximately 9:40 PM, Steven Politi and Alex Castiello appeared with
respect to alterations planned at 1721 Massachusetts Avenue. There was discussion
of a sign to appear on the front of the building reading "Castiello Bakery" in
brown on a sand background, and a second sign on the rear with the same words in'
white on brick. A permanent awning in chocolate brown would also be installed.
This hearing was also adjourned to July 25,
At approximately 10:00 PM, Richard Hendrickson appeared with respect to
color changes at 1088 Massachusetts Avenue. The body of the house would be

"Renwick Heather", the trim white and the blinds black. It was agreed to
adjourn this hearing to July 25, 1984.
At 10:00 PM, there was discussion of a proposal by Richard D. and Margaret
B. Briggs regarding an addition at 922 Massachusetts Avenue which would not be
visible from a public way. There was consensus that the addition would, indeed,
not be visible, and a determination to that effect could be made on July 25.
The meeting adjourned at 10:15 PM.
