HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION
October 17, 1984
A meeting of the Historic Districts Commission was held on Wednesday,
October 17, 1984, in the Town Office Building, Lexington. Present were
Commissioners John L. Davies, Chairman; Roland B. Greeley; Ann Wallace; and
Associate Commissioners Stephen B_ Cripps and Albert T. Pitt.
At 8:20 P.M. Dr. Theodore J_ Anderson appeared with respect to a pro-
posed sign at 10 Muzzey Street, which is within the Battle Green District.
The sign will be an oval shape, 24" x 42". The background will be brown,
with incised gold leaf letters 2 1/2" high, in Times Roman style. It will
be centered over the entrance to Dr. Anderson's upstairs office. The sign
wil read "Lexington Psychiatric & Counseling Services". The members
expressed a preference for the ampersand rather than the word "and". With
this agreement, the proposal was VOTED.
At 8:25 P.M. Ms. Grace A. Ciccolo appeared on behalf of "Color rle
Beautiful" with respect to the installation of a sign with that wording at
1628 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle Green District. The
sign will be 12" x 68" with a white background, maroon letters, and a 1"
border in color to match the letters. The relative qualities of the printed
company logo and the drawing of the sign were compared. It was agreed and
VOTED that the sign lettering shall match the company logo in style and pre-
cision, and that the exact maroon color shall match the ink of the company
logo.
At 8:40 P.NI. a representative of Hodgdon-Noyes Buick, Inc. appeared to
discuss a proposed change in the signs on the building at 39 Bedford Street,
which is within the Battle Green District. The new signs will read "Hodgdon-
Noyes Gulf", "Brake Service", "Tune-Up", and "Rentals". The letter sizes
will be 18", 12", and 10". A 2' x 5' panel of 4" letters with prices and
types of gasoline was also proposed for the space between the two left hand
doors. There was discussion about whether the building would have too many
signs. Mr. Wilbur Jaquith, former Chairman of the Commission, spoke to the
effect that no other gas stations in the districts have signs posting prices
and products. The sign panel announcing prices and products was disappro-
ved, and the other four signs were VOTED.
Following this discussion, hir_ Wilbur N1. Jaquith appeared on behalf of
the Lexington Historical Society to discuss a proposed sign for the Munroe
Tavern, a continued hearing from June 6, 1984. The sign will be the same
sign that formerly hung from a tree in front of the building, and it will be
relocated to a sign post further toward the westerly end of the property.
The sign post will be 6" x 6" with a 4" x 4" horizontal arm. The sigh it-
self is 4'-8" high, and its bottom will be approximately 5' from the ground.
The color of the sign post was discussed, and it was agreed that it should
be a stain resembling naturally weathered wood. With this agreement the
project was VOTED.
Bills from Beacon Communications in the amount of $24.30 were VOTED.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:00 P.r1.
