HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION
July 25, 1984
A meeting of the Historic Districts Commission was held on Wednesday, July
25, 1984, in the Selectmen's Meeting Room, Town Office Building, Lexington.
Present were Commissioners Sohn L. Davies, Chair; Linda J. McAulay, Secretary;
and John Ryan, and Assistant Commissioners Stephen B. Cripps, Walter S. Pierce,
and Albert T. Pitt.
At 8:00 PM, David Gaynor appeared on behalf of American Health Care, Inc.
in a continued hearing to request approval of a sign at 35 Bedford Street. The
sign would be double faced carved wood reading "CARE ONE DOCTORS (cross logo)
8 AM - 9PM MONDAY - SATIIRDAY". It would be 7' 6" high and 5' 11" wide overall,
with raised bronze letters against a dark beige background. The cross, posts,
brackets and frame would be white.
There was discussion of the post size and the height of the sign, and it
was agreed that the posts shall be the same 6"x6" size and the height shall be
the same 7' as the "Liberties" sign. The sign will be illuminated by fixtures
buried in the ground. It was also agreed that the post cap design shall match
the "Liberties" sign.
There was considerable discussion about the possibility of other tenants
requesting other street front signs. It was suggested and agreed to by the
applicant that the approval should be subject to the condition that the sign
shall be removed if other condominium owners or the condominium association
should successfully petition for other freestanding signs or a directory sign.
Mr. Ryan was not satisfied with this provision. Mr. Pierce said he felt it was
a good solution, and the other Commissioners agreed.
Further discussion followed about the size of the sign, and it was agreed to
make it less dominant by removing the scroll design at the top. The proposal
was VOTED without the top scroll, with a height limitation of 7', with 6"xb"
posts and finials matching the "Liberties" sign, and with the provision that
the sign may be removed if other tenants successfully seek approval for
other signs. Commissioners Davies, McAulay, Cripps and Pitt voted for and
Mr. Ryan voted against.
At 8:35 PM, Mrs. Mildred Freeman of 2 Russell Square appeared in a con-
tinued hearing to request approval of a glazed "solar bay" on the rear deck of
their condominium unit at that address. The reasons for the addition, as set
forth at the meeting of July 18, were explained. Mr. Davies said he felt
the proposal solved some difficult problems for the owner. Mrs. McAulay
expressed opposition. Mr. Cripps said he would reluctantly approve. The
proposal was finally VOTED with Commissioners Davies, Ryan, Cripps and Pitt
for and Mrs. McAulay voting against.
At 8:55 PM, Patricia Church and Denise M. Cote appeared in a continued
hearing on behalf of Church and Cote, Jewelers with regard to proposed signs
at 17 Depot Square. One sign, using the former "Village Artisans" backboard
would read "Church & Cote Jewelers" over the door, with 7" letters on a 6' x
n n
22 high backboard, The second sign, over the window, using 5 letters would
read the same. The backboards would be eggshell in color, matching the build
ing trim , and the letters would be maroon.

There was discussion of the lettering size and style, and it was agreed
that the ampersand should be the size of the lower case letters and the first
"h" in each sign should be re-drawn to match the second "h". The proposal was
VOTED as modified.
At approximately 9:15 PM, Mr. Richard Hendrickson appeared in a continued
hearing with respect to color changes at 1088 Massachusetts Avenue. The body of
the house would be a lavender tinted gray, the trim, window sash, porch railing
and colums would be white, and the blinds black. There was discussion of the
exact shade of lavender grey. The general shade was approved subject to a
site visit in order to inspect samples on the house wall in daylight. The
hearing was then adjourned to 8AM, Thursday, December 13, at the site, at which
time and place the proposal was VOTED.
At approximately 9:30 PM, Richard D. and Margaret B. Briggs appeared in a
cotinued hearing regarding an addition at 922 Massachusetts Avenue which they
contended would not be visible from a public way. It was VOTED that, as deter-
mined by the Commission, the addition would not be visible from a public way
and a Certificate therefore would not be needed.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:45 PM.
