HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION
A meeting of the Historic Districts Commission was held on Wednesday,
.?anuary li, 1984, in the Selectmen's Meeting Room, Town Office Building,
Lexington. Present were Commissioners John L. Davies, Chairman; S.
Lawrence Whipple, Secretary; Roland B. Greeley; and Associate Commissioners
Stephen B. Cripps and Richard S. Morehouse.
Mr. Davies reported. that in response to his request USA Today had
agreed to remove the box at the corner at Massachusetts Avenue and t~farrett
Road.
At 8:20 I'.Pr. Mr. Steven Custance appeared on behalf of The First
Baptist Church with respect to a proposed sigr. at the church building at
1580 Massachusetts Avenue. He submitted drawings which indicated a sign
3 feet wide and 6'-8' high, set between two posts which would be attached
to two concrete bases with steel connections. The bottom section of the
sign would be removable. The Commissioners expressed the opinion that the
sign was unnecessarily high, that there was no need for the concrete bases
to appear above grade, and that insufficient information was being pre-
sented with regard to the lettering. The hearing was adjourned until
February 15, 1984 at which time Mr. Custance agreed that he xill have more
information available.
At 8:40 Y.M. Mr. Earl Peterson of Morgan Industries appeared with
respect to a replacement awning for the Yangtze River Restaurant at 35
Depot Square. The existing awning had been heavily damaged and required
replacement. The new awning will be identical to the old in size and
color, but it will not have a scalloped valance. The new valance will be
straight and will have lettering reading "Restaurant" on the ends and
"Yangtze River" on the front. The awning xill be installed on the existing
frame. There was discussien of the lettering size, and the proposal was
VOTED subject to the lettering not being larger than 6" high.
Bi11s were then approved in the amounts of $15,38 from Beacon Publi-
cations and $56.30 from Barbara Gilson.
r.r. Davies reported a conversation with teter DiMatteo in which Mr.
DiMatteo agreed that his office could accept the submission of drawings
prior to HDC hearings, and that they could help distribute application
forms if such xere adopted by the Commission. Mr. DiMatteo had also sug-
gested nominal filing fees, but several Commissioners expressed reluctance
to require any fees for application.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 P.M.
