A meeting of the Historic Districts Commission was held at 8:00 "t'.t.
on 4tednesday, June 29, 1983, in Estabrook Hall in the Cary Memorial Build-
ing, Lexington. Present were Commissioners John L. Davies, Chairman; S,
Lawrence Whipple, Secretary; John E. Ryan; Ann 'Wallace; and Associate Com-
missioners Stephen B. Cripps and Richard S. Morehouse.
At 8:10 P.M. N",s. Virginia Orcutt of 531 Massachusetts Avenue appeared
to request a Certificate for the construction of a shed. roof over the
existing fla± roofed wing at. the rear of that, address. There appeared to
be inconsistencies in the drawing presented, which was not to scale, and
the hearing was continued to July 27.
At 8:30 Y.M. I+is. Amy Semolyenko appeared on behalf of ',Jayside ;square
Ass~oiates to request approval far new lighting fixtures at 10 I+:uzzey
Street, which will be part of a landscaping improvement not otherwise under
the Commission's jurisdiction. The fixtures will be lanterns, style A79P
as manufactured by A. J. P. Coopersmiths, as illustrated in the brochure
and drawing submitted. Within this electrical work, there was also
included a condenser unit for a heat pump, which will be a round landscaped
planting areas. It was Y01'~U to approve the fixtures and the condenser
unit, as submitted.
At 8:45 P.M. I,s. Gloria Holland appeared on behalf of La Tienda Mexi-
can Shop to request permission to relocate the existing sign, formerly
installed at 1544 Massachusetts Avenue, at the Shop's new location at 17A
Nlericam Street. This projecting sign had been previously approved for the
former location, but it was noted that the gilded areas were gold paint
rather than gold leaf and therefore did not conform in color to the other
signs on the building. It was also noted, however, that this sign would
be projecting while the others are atached to the building fascia. There
was discussion of this issue. It was VGTED to approve the sign, with
Mr. Whipple voting against.
At 9:00 P.I~1. Mr. Kirk Noyes appeared on behalf of Sydney Noyes Ander-
son, Inc. to request changes to the former Muzzey Juniox High School build-
ing at 11;75 I+lassachusetts Avenue. With him were Tony %'latt, idancy Goodwin,
and Bruce Heyl of Anderson Notter F'inegold, Architects. "i'he applicants
presented a series of slides illustrating the project, as well as architec-
tural drawings for those features for which approval was being requested.
After discussion of the project as a whole, it was VO`1r~U to approve the
followir_g features:

The construction will include balconies in certain units,
which will be entirely recessed within the slope of the
roof.

Certain pump condensers will be included with these
balconies, each approximately 30" high and 24" diameter.
?5 Velux roof windows will be included to light the bed-
rooms of certain units.
east Elevation:
The round vent at the east gable will be replaced with
a round window.
One ground floor window will be replaced by a reces;~ed
entry bay with a glass transom over it, in the form of
one of the existing window sash. 'dithin the entry bay
there will be recessed doors to txo units.
A porch will be added at the south end of the east wall,
which was approved in principle, but approval for this
porch xas not included, pending the receipt of more i
detailed design drawings of that particular feature. I

New windows will be cut in the basement wall to light
certain units.
The paved area which was cafeteria service will be ~i~
changed into a garden for two of the units.
Two sets of steps will be rebuilt.
The west entry walk will be removed.
Heat pump condensers will be concealed in proposed
shrubbery.
1'he metal "Nuzzey Junior High School" sign will be
removed.

Color Scheme:
`~he painted wood trim will be repainted in two colors,
with a gray tone on the "structural" trim, or that
representing structure, such as pilasters, and a cream
tone on "non-structural" trim, such as window sash. It
was agreed to permit the applicant to experiment with
exact shades of these colors on the actual building for
later inspection and approval by the Commission.

It was noted that the entire building is under the jurisdiction of
the Commission, since all of it is visible from various public ways. The
applicant will present drawings of the rear areas for approval at a later
date, as well as detailed drawings for the proposed porch, drawings of any
fencing contemplated, or any other features not included among those
approved or. this date.
At 10:30 P.t-1. Alan D. and Candace Fraser appeared to request apprc-
val of a color change on the house at 2101 Massachusetts Avenue. the body

the front door and window blinds will be black. It was VUT~D to approve
this color change.
It was VOTrD to approve bills of ~39.9~ for tseacan-Minute Man t~ubli-
cations and ~15y.5U for tsarbara Gilson, for a total of ~lyy.~~8.
