HomeMy WebLinkAbout1983-05-25 N i HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION A meeting of the Historic Districts Commission was held at 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday, Mary 25, 1983, in the Selectmen's Meeting Room, Town Office Building, Lexington. Present xere Commissioners John L. Davies, Chair- man; S. Lawrence Whipple, Secretary; John E. Ryan; Ann Wallace; and Asso- ciate Commissioners Stephen B. Cripps and Linda J. McAulay. At 8:05 P.M. Mr. Manfred P. Friedman requested a Certificate of Appropriateness xith respect to installing blinds on the front of the barn (nox used as apartments} at 469 Massachusetts Avenue. There xas discussion of vir~yl louvered pattern blinds and blinds made of vertical slats. The sense of the Commission xas that neither of these choices xas preferable to no blinds at all. Wood louvered blinds xere discussed, and it xas VOTED to approve the installation of white painted wood louvered blinds on the front of the building, xith Mrs. Wallace voting against. At 8:15 F.M. Mr. Ralph H. Hall appeared on behalf of S & A Realty Trust to request permission to install natural aluminum combination storm windoxs on the second floor of the building at 1656 Massachusetts Avenue, He submitted specifications for the proposed windows from Shoemaker, Inc. Mr. Hall prefers natural finish in order to match the existing first floor xindows, and there xas discussion of the possibility of painting the windows on both floors at a future date. It was VOTED to approve natural aluminum windows at the second floor, in the expectation that at a future date they will be painted to match the trim and siding. At 8:30 Y.M. Mr. Paul C. Sidman appeared on behalf of the Versailles Restaurant at 1777 Massachusetts Avenue to request an awning at the front of the restaurant and a sign at the rear. The drawings furnished did not contain sufficient information for Commission action, and it xas VOTED to extend the matter until the next meeting. At 8;55 P.M. Mr. Mark Moore, Jr. appeared on behalf of Moore Homes, Inc. to request a free standing sign for the Liberties Medical Center at 35 Bedford Street. With him xere Drs. Weinberg and Richmond. The sign will be in accordance xith the drawings submitted, and will be illuminated by floodlights recessed in the ground. It xas noted that the Board of Appeals had already approved the sign, and a temporary sign similar to the permanent one xas already installed. It was VOTED to approve the sign as presented, xith Mrs. Wallace abstaining. At 9:I5 P.M. Ms. Patricia Brandes appeared on behalf of The Waldorf School with res ect to the installation of replacement windows at The Waldorf School former Adams School} at 739 Massachusetts Avenue. She presented elevation drawings of the building shoxing xindox locations and specifications for Graham series 475 double hung aluminum windows. The front windows xill be typically "6 over 6" and the larger rear windows "12 over 12". The windoxs on the westerly and northerly sides of the building rill be fitted xith stainless steel mesh aluminum muntins, screw w K . • Historic Districts Commission - 2 - May 2,5, 1983 fastened to the frames, over insulating glass. Mr. Roland Gubische spoke in favor of the proposal. It was VOTED to approve the windows as presented, and that the color may be either "ivory" or "colonial white" as shown on the Graham samples. At g:35 P.M. Mr. David G. Williams of 1433 Massachusetts Avenue appeared to request permission to change the roof at that address from a deteriorated xhite to new GAF black asphalt shingles. It was VOTED to approve that. At approximately 9:20 P.M. Mr. Kirk Noyes, developer for the former Muzzey School appeared to make an informal presentation of that project. With him were architects Tony Platt, Nancy Goodwin, and Bruce Heil. The meeting was adjourned at 10:45 P.M. S. Lawrence Whipple Secretary
