A meeting of the Historic Districts Commission xas held at 8:00 P.M.
on Wednesday, February 2, 2983, in the Selectmen's Meeting Room, Town
Office Building, Lexington. Present were Commissioners John R. Packard,
Chairman; S. Lawrence Whipple, Secretary; John L. Davies; Roland B.
Greeley; Ann Wallace; and Associate Commissioners Linda J. I~cAulay and
Mollie Nye.
At 8:05 P.M. the Librarian, Mr. Robert Hilton, presented drawings for
handrails on the steps to the front entrance of the East Lexington Branch
at 735 Massachusetts Avenue. The drawings were prepared by Commissioner
John Davies, who disqualified himself from sitting on this hearing. The
Commission had preiously seen the drawings at an informal hearing, and
after a brief discussion VOTED to approve the same.
At 8:I5 P.M. Lisa B. Duffy requested approval for three signs for
BellaLisa Maternities at 8 Muzzey Street. One would be over a front win-
dow on Mussey Street, and the other two would be on the sides closest to
Muzzey Street, under signs of The Crafty Yankee. The Commission directed
that the side signs be installed at window level, not between floors, as
presented. With this change and after discussion of the possibility that
other signs may be erected on this building before too long, it was VOTED
to approve the signs.
After the hearing the chairman noted that the height of the two side
signs may exceed that permitted by the Sign By-Law, although they are
apparently identical in size to the two existing Crafty Yankee signs.
Accordingly, a certificate of appropriateness was prepared insuring that
these signs will conform to the By-Law.
At 8x50 P.Ni. Mr. Kevin McGrath of the Battle Green Motor Inn of 1720
Massachusetts Avenue began discussion of a number of matters. First the
Commission considered doors and sliding windows, removable in warm weather,
to enclose the main courtyard. These would be 36' or further from the
Massachusetts Avenue sidewalk and seemed to be a sensible and attractive
plan for keeping the courtyard warm. It was accordingly VOTED to approve
the doors and windows.
Mr. McGrath next discussed an AAA sign to replace the "90 Rooms" sign
over the Massachusetts Avenue ramp. He asked that the new sign be centered
under the main Battle Green Inn sign, but the Commission felt that it would
look better over the front entrance to the right of the ramp and VOTED to
approve the sign for that location.
The Commission then VOTED to approve a new AAA sign for the Waltham
Street end of the Inn.
As its final business of the evening the Commission VOTED to approve
payment of bills of $138.x+. The meeting ~x~/a/s adjourned at 9;45 P.Ir;.
