HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION A meeting of the Historic Districts Commission was held at 8s00 P.M. on Wednesday, September 30, i98i, in the Selectmen's Meeting Room, Town Office Building, Lexington. Present xere Commissioners John R. Packard, Chairmen; S. Lawrence Whipple, Secretary; John L. Davies; Roland B. Greeley; and Associate Commissioners Linda d. McAuley, Richard S. Morehouse, and Molly I~ye. At 8100 P.M. Malcolm Vanderheide of Fotomat and Mr. Jones (sub-tenant) of Joel's presented new plans for signs at 1'740 Massachusetts Avenue, the former Loralane premises. The Commission liked the general plan of the signs, but thought it necessary to see them all presented in one seals drawing. with the Joel's sign over the entrance reduced in sise. The appli- cants xere invited to return on October 14. The Commission xould like to have the xhite paint removed from the brick columns and, if that is done, will not now insist upon removal of the glass bock wall on Waltham Street. At 845 P.M. Donald Wilson discussed changes he xished to make in the garage at bib-620 Massachusetts Avenue, to close in windows and one door and to replace the existing siding with random width barn board siding. After a brief discussion it was VOTED to approve the request as presented. At 9s00 P.M. William Dailey asked for permission to use black asphalt shingles on the entire roof at 1620 Massachusetts Avenue. The Commission previously approved asphalt for a portion of the roof, but the slate shingles that xere to remain have proven to be too old to retain. It xas therefore VOTED to approve asphalt for the entire roof. At 9:20 P.M. William Fairing, D.C. showed the Commission drawings of a directory sign to be installed on the Massachusetts Avenue facade of 1844 1844B Massachusetts Avenue (Douglass Building). The new sign will point the way to the offices entered through the side door. Hence the existing sign searing this purpose dust around the corner from the new one will be moved to the left of the side door. With this addition, it was VOTED to approve the application. It xas then VOTED to approve several bills for publishing, stationery and clerical services. Following a discussion of form letters to be deli- vered to real estate brokers and residents of the historic distrlcts reminding them of the existence of the districts, the meeting was ad3ourned at 9150 P.M. ?
