HomeMy WebLinkAbout1981-06-10 w n HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION A meeting of the Historic Districts Commission was held on Wednesday, June 10, 1981, at 8x00 P.M. in the Selectmen's Meeting Room, Toxn Office Building, Lexington. Present were Commissioners John R. Packard, Chairman; S. Lawrence Whipple, Secretary; John L. Davies; Associate Commissioners Linda J. McAulay and Richard S. Morehouse; and at 9s00 P.M. for the final hearing Commissioner Roland B. Greeley. At 8s10 P.M. the Commission reviewed plans for the Gallery on the Green~Depot Square Artists' sign at 2837 Massachusetts Avenue. This is a projecting sign already in place and previously utilized, now to be changed to reflect the presence of anew tenant and to be painted a more visible color - dark red xith gold lettering. The Commission recommended gold leaf instead of gold paint, but left the choice up to the applicants, and VOTED to approve the sign as presented. At 8s20 P.M. Brigham's, Inc. presented a request for a simple sign in black letters reading "Brigham's" over the front door of their ice cream emporium at 38 Bedford Street. The Commission VOTED to approve the same, after reducing the letters to five inch size. Because it is concerned that this may be regarded as a second sign on one facade, not permitted by the Sign By-Law, the Commission directed that this aspect of the matter be reviewed with the Board of Appeals. At 8:30 P.M. Mlle. Susan LaYiolette and Win S. Caouette discussed a free-standing sign for Mlle. LaViolette's Physical Therapy Associates at i 5 Raymond Street. The Commission expressed some concern that a free- standing sign, along with the projecting sign already on the front porch, might not be suitable for this location. In any event, approval of a free- standing sign is subject first to decision by the Board of Appeals, and the Commission therefore declined to act on the matter until that Board has spoken. At 9s00 P.M. Guenther and Nicole Weinkopf spoke to the Commission about a sign for their new restaurant at 1777 Massachusetts Avenue, a loca- tion formerly occupied by Brigham's. The Commission did not object to the plans as presented but found them incomplete - no information or dimensions of sign and Letters and colors. Accodringly, no vote was taken and the applicant will return on June 24th with more complete drawings. The final hearing of the evening involved Arthur and Jewel Douglass, who wish to paint their new home at 2046 Massachusetts Avenue and to make certain exterior architectural changed designed to bring more light into the house, particularly in the kitchen and waster bedroom. The Commission accepted the plans as presented, with a minor demurrer or two about sky- lights, and VOTED to approve the same. Routine bills for publishing, printing, and clerical services, in the amount of $229.70, were VOTED for payment by the Toxn. 6i ~ i Historic Districts Commission - 2 - June 20, 1981 Finally Ann Grady, Bulent Kastarlak, and %ilbur Jaquith presented a model of the Garrity House, prepared by Interchange, as they hope it xill appear following Town Meeting approval of a zoning change to permit com- mercial use of the premises. A lengthy scrutin3r of the model followed. The Commission has long been concerned with the preservation of both the Garrity House and barn at this corner of the Buckman Tavern grounds, and VOTED to authorize Mrs. Grady to report to the proper town authorities that the Commission was generally in favor of the Interchange plan, subject to a formal hearing. This may be several months away because, unless there is a special town meeting, the matter will not come before the Town Meeting until March of 1982. The meeting was adjourned at 20:i5 P.M. ~ S .
