Present were Commissioners John R. Packard, Chairman; John L. Davies; Roland B. Greeley; Ann Wallace; 5. Lawrence Whipple; and Associate Commissioners Linda J. McAuley and Richard S. Morehouse. Before the start of the first formal hearing, the Commission examined samples of awning colors proposed for the L'il Peach and Bel Canto premises at 1715-i72i Massachusetts Avenue. The Commission favored the red and green colors and left it to the two applicants to determine which store would have which color. All awnings will be one solid color, without piping, letter and stripes. At 8si5 P.M. Lexington Coin, at 854 Massachusetts Avenue, presented scale drawings of its sign, which include the store name and a replica of the 1925 Lexington~Coneord half dollar. After a brief discussion, it was VOTED to approve the same. At 8:30 P.M. Shell 011 Company presented plans for additions to the station at 46 Bedford Street, on the corner of Worthen Road. The first request was for a portico over the area where self-service customers pay for their gasoline. This presented no difficulties, and it was YOTED to approve the same, omitting, however, the railing on the rooftop. The second request was for an all-petal canopy over the self-service island. It would be 7 I~2' high x 9' x 34'. In the opinion of all Com- mission members was much too large for this location and was so VOTED. The applicant was invited to return at the next Commission hearing and present plans for a less massive canopy, if it is possible to design one. The issuance of a certificate xill be delayed unt11 this second presentation. This ended the formal hearings fvr the evening. There followed an extensive discussion of what the Commission should do, if anything, about the Garrity House and barn on the Buckman Tavern grounds and how it should concern itself with the future use of the Adams School, which stands 3ust outside the limits of the East Village District. In the end, the Chairman agreed to write a letter to the Selectmen urging them to continue the efforts to save the Garrity House and to re3ect any proposals to enlarge the Adams School or take East Lexington Library land for parking spaces.
