HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSIOAi
A meeting of the Historic Districts Commission was held at 8s00 P.M.
on Wednesday, l~ovember 12, 1980, in the Selectmen's Meeting Room, Toxn
Office Building, Lexington. Present were Commissioners Roland B. Greeley,
Ann Wallace, and S. Lawrence Whipple; and Associate Commissioners Linda J.
McAuley and Howard C. Mason.
On motion duly made by Mr. Whipple and seconded, it was VOTED that
Roland B. Greeley serve as Chairman Pro Tem.
At 8s 0,5 P.M. Francis D. Peters presented a request for a sign at 1806
Massachusetts Avenue, the sign to read "Apple Scruffs". After review of
scale drawings submitted and discussion of the details to be incorporated
in a certificate, it was VOTED to approve the sign.
At 8s20 P.M. Jewel S. Douglass came in to discuss a directory sign for
the building at 184~rB Massachusetts Avenue. The sign x111 be affixed to the
wall of the Library elevation of the building. The details were discussed
from scale drawings submitted. These will be incorporated in a certificate,
it having been VOTED to approve the sign.
At 8s40 P.M. the third applicant of the evening. Monument Realty Trust,
represented by Richard S. Morehouse, made a request for approval of an out-
side enclosed stairway for the rear of the office building at 18 Muzzey
Street. It was VOTED to approve the plans as presented.
Having concluded the three scheduled hearings of the evening, at 8sgo PM
the Commission again took up the request (first presented on October 22) of
Paul E. Hartle for a sign on the building at 1640 Massachusetts Avenue.
Jerry Slack, owner of the building, again appeared in support of Mr. Hartle.
The sign requested is a pro3ecting, double-faced one, reading "Photo Craft'i,; ,
"Art Gallery", and "Custom Framing". At the previous meeting discussion had
focused on the too-ornate frame for the sign. This evening there was much
concern expressed that the sign appeared "too cluttered". It was eventually
YOTED to delegate to Mr. Whipple and Mrs. Wallace the task of making a final
review of one more set of scale drawings, which, if approved by them, will
be sufficient to win approval for the sign.
There followed an informal discussion with Elisabeth Bryant on a Uni-
cornAssociates sign for a bookstore to be opened in Mr. Slack's building.
It was then VOTED to approve bills for publication and clerical ser-
vices, and to approve a short article on the Commission's 1980 activities
for the Town Report.
The meeting was ad3ourned at 9:30 P.M.
