HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION
A meeting of the Historic Districts Commission was held at 8s00 P.M.
on Wednesday, September 20, 3980, in the Selectmen's Meeting Room, Town
Office Building, Lexington. Present were Commissioners John R. Packard,
Chairman; John L. Davies; Ann Wallace; S. Lawrence Whipple; and Associate
Commissioner Richard S. Morehouse.
At 800 P.M. it was VOTED to approve the usual bills for publication
and Miss Gilson's services as Clerk.
At 8:30 P.M. Ms. Pat Brandes presented the application of The Waldorf
School, now located in the Adams School, fora sign to be located on the
Library side of the driveway leading from Massachusetts Avenue to the
Adams School. There was an extensive discussion as to (I) whether there
should be a sign at all (2) where it should be located (3) whether it
should be parallel to, or perpendicular Massachusetts Avenue (4) how
large it should be (5) what colors it should have. The Commission deferred
a vote until nex plans could be presented at a future date. It appears
that most members favor a sign of some sort but not on the Library side of
the driveway; that the sign presented (~'S" high and 4'20" wide) was much
too big; that a darktstain with gold leaf letters xould be attractive; and
that precise placement needed further study.
At 8:50 P.M. Shell Oil Company, represented by Charles Ford and Jack
Grant, asked for approval of the construction of a second i7 foot island
on the station at Worthen Road and Bedford Street. It would have colonial
lights matching the existing ones, and txo pumps of a new style that will
do the xork of six of the existing style. After discussion the Commission
VOTED to approve the plans, adding that the so-called "permanent point of
sale" sigr?s on the Worthen Road and Bedford Street light posts shall be
removed, and that tree plantings should be considered for the intersection,
all oi' xhich the applicant agreed to.
The meeting was adjourned at 9e50 P.M.
