" HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION
A meeting of the Historic Districts Commission was held
at 8x00 P.M. on Wednesday, March 12, 1980 in Room G-15 of the
Town Office Building, Lexington. Present were Commissioners
John R. Packard, Chairman; Ann Wallace= S. Lawrence Whipple=
Roland B. Greeleys John L. Daviesi and Associate Commissioner
Richard S. Morehouse.
At 8:00 P. M. Sherrard Arch presented revised plans for
Arch Athletic Wear at 852 Massachusetts Avenue in response to
the Commission's request at a hearing on February 27, 1980.
After discussion it was VOTED to approve the revised plans with
the proviso, to be incorporated in the certificate, that the
space between "Athletic" and "Wear" be reduced from 6" to
4-4~" and the suggestion that the letters be made "less bold"
if the applicant so desires.
At 8:15 P. M. Mr. J. Paul Fennell presented revised plans
for the Mall Discount Store at 1800 Massachusetts Avenue again
in response to the Commission's request at a hearing on February
27, 1980. The revised plans, the final version of which is to
be forwarded to the Commission before a certif icate issues, will
eliminate orange horizontal stripes at the top and bottom of
the sign, and replace them with brown stripes. After discussion
it was VOTED 4-1 to approve the sign, the Chairman dissenting.
It was then noted that action was to be taken on the
application of Christos Kentos for a sign for his store "Snack
Time" at 1734 Massachusetts Avenue. since time to act ther~~n
would expire before the next meeting of the Commission. It was
-2-
accordingly 3i0TED unanimously to disapprove the application,
for lack of prosecution of same, and because the plans did not
include removal of the red panels from the store Front.
Routine bills for publication and clerical expenses were
then VOTED.
The members were reminded of a Districts Workshop to be
held for the benef it of the many Massachusetts Historic Dis-
tricts Commissions at the Wellesley Community Center on March
28, 1980. Mr. Richard Morehouse of .tine Commission has kindly
consented to be one of the speakers, on the subject of design
review in Lexington, and it is hoped that other members will
have time to attend.
Word has been received that the Town has condemned the
"Garrity House" or "Red Cross House" and barn at the head of
Hancock Street adjacent to the Buckman Tavern grounds. This
•matter was discussed at some length, and the Chairman was
authorized to confer with other interested groups, primarily
the Historical Commission, to find ways and means of saving
these structures. It was suggested that a commitment should
be sought from the Selectmen not to demolish the buildings
pending a more happy solution, and it appeared unnecessary at
this time to take legal action to prevent demolition. The
Commission is unanimous in stating that the buildings must be
preserved.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:15 P. M.
