A meeting of the Hist~aric Districts Commission was held
at 8:10 P.M. on Wednesday evening, January 30, 1980 in the
Selectmen's Meeting Room, Town Office Building, Lexington,
having previously been called to order and adjourned from
Room G-15 in said Building, the announced site of the meeting.

Present were Commissioner John R. Packard, Chairman. ~~s~a
H. Williams, Secretary, John L, Davies and S. Lawrence Whipple, I~
Commissioners, and Associate Commissioners Linda J. McAuley
and Richard 5. Morehouse.
At 8x10 P.M. Mr. Christos Kantos presented a request for
a sign reading "Snack Time" for his store at 1734 Massachusetts
Avenue, formerly occupied by Cheryl's Bakery. The sign would
resemble in style, color and construction the Cheryl's Bakery
sign. No other changes were requested by the applicant. The
Commission noted that this store front has red panels covering
the brick columns of the store frs~nt, panels the Commission has
long considered detrimental to ghe facade of an attractive
commercial property. The Commission is not inclined to approve
any exterior architectural changes to this store which do not
include plans for removal of the red panels. After discussion
it was suggested that the applicant review the matter with his
landlord, and continue the hearing at the Commission's next
meeting on February 13. The hearing was adjourned at So45 P. M.

without a vote.
Mrs. Elizabeth Pressman came in at 8:45 P.M. to continue
the hearing on a pay telephone for Lexington center. On
January 9 the Commission expressed doubts about locating the
• -2-
telephone on Massachusetts Avenue near the entrance to Depot
Square, and asked Mrs. Pressman to discuss other locations
with the Selectmen. She reported that the Selectmen still
favored this location, but were also willing to consider the
area between Leader Federal Savings Bank and Cary Memorial
Library. They were apparently not in favor of locations
further down Massachusetts Avenue towards East Lexington, or
within Depot Square near the Lexpress bus stop. The Commission
felt that the installation of a telephone where favored by
the Selectmen would detract from the appearance of all the
locations and accordingly VOTED unanimously to disapprove
the application, without prejudice to any future application.
At 9110 P.M. Mr. Richard S. Morehouse presented plans for
the exterior of the Parsonage of the First Baptist Church at
1598 Massachusetts Avenue. These included the installation of
white aluminum storm windows and doors, elimination of two
windows on the sunporch and replacement of three others there.
The Parsonage will continls+~to be painted white with black
shutters and trim. After discussion the Commission VO`D to
approve the changes as requested.
At 9:25 P. M. Elizabeth Carney and Henry Patterson pre-
sented revised plans for the signs and facades of Bel Canto
Restaurant at 1 1 Massachusetts Avenue continua the hearin

begun on January 9• The applicants accepted the Commission's
earlier advice to substitute and "0" for an "onion" in
"Canto: on the front sign, and to use their logo on the smaller
rear sign. They also agreed to supply "warm white" fluorescent

lighting for front and rear. Their plans included a new rear
door, and new windows on the westerly elevation, all of which
the Commission found would enhance the appearance of the store.
Accordingly it was YOT_ED to approve the revised plans as
submitted.
Mr. Packard then went over a few typographical errors in
the Commission's printed compilation of its statute, errors
discovered by the Town Clerk when she was asked by officials
in Concord to certify that said compilation was a true copy
of the statute and all amendments as passed by the Great and
General Court.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:30 P.M.
