. HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION
A meeting of the Historic Districts Commission was held
on November 7. 1979 in the Selectmen's Meeting Room, Town
Office Building, Lexington. Present were John R. Packard,
Chairman; Georgia Williams, Secretary; and the three remaining
Commissioners, Lawrence Whipple, Roland Greeley, and John L.
Davie s also pr~:aeA.t were Associate Commissioners Linda J.
McAuley and Howard C. Nason.
At 8s05 P. M. Bruce Ribas presented his scale drawings
of signs for his new store, Melinda's, at 1719-21 Massachusetts
Avenue. a matter discussed informally on October 17. After
extended discussion, and modif ication of the plans submitted,
all to be shown in a certificate of appropriateness, the
Commission VOTED to approve a sign for the front of the store.
The Commission also VOTED to approve the use of the existing
awnings installed by the previous tenant, CVS, with new panels
to eliminate the CVS name and on one panel, to replace it with
"Melinda's". No scale drawings were presented for a sign on
the rear of the premises, but the applicant was invited to
submit them at the Commission's next hearing on November 28.
At 8:45 the Commission heard the request of Decelle, Inc.
for approval of exterior changes and signs on the premises at
1690-1'708 Massachusetts Avenue. The plans, many of which had
been discussed informall at an earlier date were resented
Y ,
P
by Mr. Gary Frawley and Mr. Charles Lavoie, and were on the
whole found acceptable. The Commission did, however. suggest
a change for the left front "Decelle's" sign, so that it would

fill more of the available space. After further discussion
it VOTED to approve the plans, and to recommend to the Board
of Appeals that it permit the erection of two signs for the
front of the store, because of the special circumstances
of the case.
At 9:20 P.M. the Commission heard the request of Baskin,
Robbins for permission to install an awning on the premises
at 1729 Massachusetts Avenue. Although the Commission was
sympathetic to the request, it VOTED to adjourn the hearing
until November 28, to give the applicant time to submit
samples of the materials to be used, and scale drawings
showing precisely how the awning will be installed.
At 9s40 the Commission took up once again the request of
Lexington Center Realty Association for an addition to the
premises at 1760-62 Massachusetts Avenue. The applicant pre-
viously submitted plans for a second story addition only,
which were not well received, and now submitted plans in-
cluding an enclosed first floor addition, too. After extended
discussion the Commission accepted the idea that an addition
was proper, but asked that it be reduced in size. This was r
acceptable to the applicant and accordingly it was VOTED to
approve the addition, with modifications in the plans to be
I
incorporated in a certificate of appropriateness. The vote
was 4 - 1, with Commissioner Whipple voting in the negative.
The Commission concluded its activities for the evening
-3-
by discussing with Mr. Jerry Slade his plans for exterior
changes in his new premises for the Bicycle Loft at 1640-
44 Massachusetts Avenue, which will be taken up in a formal
meeting on November 28.
The meeting adjourned at 11:00 P.M.
