HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION
A meeting of the Historic Districts Commission was held
at 8 P. M. on Wednesday, October 3, 1979, in the Selectman's
Meeting Room, Town Office Building, Lexington. Present were
Commissioners John R. Packard, Chairman; Georgia H. Williams,
Secretary, John L. Davies, S. Lawrence Whipple; and Associate
Commissioner Howard C. Nason.
At 8:05 a hearing was held on the application of Richard
E. and Emilie A. Allen to replace the homasote siding on their
home at 480 Massachusetts Avenue with red cedar shingles.
Samples of both materials were observed and the superiority of the
latter was obvious. It was accordingly VOTED to approve the re-
quest, the shingles to be treated with a "bleaching" stain, and
the trim to be a Williamsburg blue, with the selection of which
Mrs. Williams agreed to assist the applicant.
After approval of the routine monthly bills, the second hear-
' ing of the night commenced at 8:30, on the request by Lexington
Center Realty Associates for a second floor addition to its prem-
ises at 1760-1762 Massachusetts Avenue. Mr. Dean Nicholson, a~~
and Mr. Louis J. Didio, engineer, presented the scale .
drawings. It was quickly noticed that there would be a second
floor only, supported by steel columns. All members had reserva-
tions about the street level appearance of such a plan, and it was
therefore agreed to postpone a decision on the matter until after
an on-site inspection of the premises on October 10.

The Commission then discussed informally with Donald
Lurie of 15 Hancock Street his plans for a second floor ad-
dition to the wing at the rear of his house. The plans were
found to be incomplete, and he was requested to have complete
plans for his formal hearing later in the fall. From the dis-
cussion it appeared that there would be in the end significant
alterations on the plans reviewed informally.
The Commission also discussed informally with the owners
of Decelle Inc. their latest plans for alterations to the
present Bargain Barn premises at 1690 Massachusetts Avenue.
These incorporated a number of suggestions made earlier in the
year by Mr. Davies, and attracted favorable comment. The Com-
mission agreed that two signs for the store front would be ap-
propriate, and would so state that opinion to the Board of Appeals
when the time came to request an exception to the town sign by- ~
law permitting only one sign per store front.
The meeting adjourned at 10 P.M.
