A meeting of the Historic Districts Commission was held on Wednesday,
March 1, 1978, in the Selectmens Meeting Room. Present were Commissioners
John R. Packard, Chairman; Georgia H. Williams, Secretary; S. Lawrence Whipple;
and Associate Commissioners John L. Davies who was appointed to serve for Com-
missioner Roland B. greeley, Linda J. McAulay who was appointed to serve for
the vacancy; and Oliver F. Hooper. Also present was former Commissioner
Wilbur hi. Jaquith.
A hearing was held at 9:15 P.M. on the application of Alan D. and Sharon
M. Bedford for a Certificate of Appropraiteness with respect to the erection
of a second-floor addition at the rear of the dwelling at 11 Harrington Road,
which is within the Battle Green District. Mr. Packard read the legal notice.
Pir. and Mrs. Bedford submitted drawings and discussed the proposed addi-
tion and changes as follows:
1. 4'6" x 13'3" long addition to enclose stairway - to extend 13'3" back
from west elevation - new oval window on west to be added in stairway
addition - includes 3'6" addition to roof.
2. 13' x 11'11" addition for new bedroom with one window on west, two on
north, and two on east - flat roof.
3. Delete solid parapet on roof of first story and instal railings.
4. Northern dormer: 7"3" on third floor matching other triple dormers on house.
5. Replace first floor window with door on two doors side by side to give
Bedfords private entrance and to give third floor tenants private
entrance.
Mrs. Beford stated that the Planning Director and the Assessors
Office have stated that this is listed as a two-family house.
6. Add window at end of present first story.
7. Cement sidewalks to steps at rear.
Then followed a discussion on the legality of a third floor apartment in
this area. Mr. Whipple suggested that the hearing be adjourned until the
Bedfords find out more about the zoning in that area. Mrs. b]cAulay said that
she would like to know if a one or two family house. Mr. Packard said that
he was not sure that would want addition, and he would like another meeting
to discuss the subject. Mr. Davies said that he felt the two issues should
be separate - appropriateness of architectural changes and issue of whether
one or two family house.
P.M.
The hearing was adjourned at 10:30 P.M. until 8:60 on March 15th.
