HomeMy WebLinkAbout1978-01-11 • HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION A meeting of the Historic Districts Commission was held on Wednesday, January 2t, 3978, in the Selectmen's Meeting Room, Toxn Office Building, Lexington. Present were Commissioners John R. Packard, Chairman; Georgia H. Williams, Secretary= Roland B. Greeley; 5. Lawrence Whipple; and Asso- ciate Commissioners Linda J. McAuley and Oliver F. Hooper. Mrs. McAuley xas appointed to serve for Commissioner Amelia G. Samoylenko xho xas un- able to serve. A hearing was held at 8a10 P.M. on the application of JoAn R. Walker for a Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to the erection and dis- play of a sign for the store at 1849 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle Green District. Mr. Packard read the legal notice and made ref- erence to the application. Mrs. Walker submitted three scale drawings of the proposed sign which is similar to the others on the Giroux Building. The gold leaf Roman style letters x111 be SO" capital letters and the legend x111 read 'Balloon Shop". The hearing was closed at 8c15 P.M. Upon motion duly made and seconded, it xas VOTED to issue a Certifi- cate of Appropriateness to JoAn R. Walker with respect to the erection and display of a sign for the store at 1849 Massachusetts Avenue, xhich is within the Battle Green District. Participating in this decision xere Com- missioners John R. Packard, Georgia H. Williams, Roland B. Greeley, S. Lawrence Whipple, and Associate Commissioner Linda J. McAuley. Mr. Greeley asked if there was any xay to avoid a hearing on all signs such as the one above xhere the owner of the building had laid down speci- fic requirements for the signs to be erected. Mr. Packard said that he had studied the Historic Districts Act and that hearings must be held. Mr. Packard commented that he xished there were some way to prevent pla.atering signs on the inside of windoxs but neither the Commission's Act nor the Town's Sign By-Lax made provision for this. Mr. Whipple commented that some toms do have regulations to prevent this plastering of xindows on the inside. Two bills xere submitted as follows: $3.50 from Minute-Man Publica- tions and $65.b2 for clerical services from Barbara Gilson, Clerk. It xas moved, seconded, and VOTED to approve payment of these two bills. McAuley. • HISTORIC DISTRICTS C01~9MISSION - page 2 January 22, i978 Mr. Packarri stated that he had received a letter from Ruth Thomas of 10 Parker Street xith reference to the pool and tennis court at the Lanzas at i884 14assa.chusetts Avenue. Mr. Packard stated that Anthony L. Dedousis of Brigham's had written that he xould like to meet with the Commission after the first of this year regarding the Brigham's sign at the Stop & Shop shopping plaza on Bedford Street. Discussion of this sign folloxed and the folloxing com- ments and decisions xere ma,dee any sign at that location should not have any "scallops" or stars, it must conform to other signs on the build , should not have any "shields", amd should be xhite xith black letters~it xas stated by some that perhaps blue letters xould be acceptable but the preference of all is for black letters). Mr. Packard said that he feels the Commission should take a tough attitude and, if necessary, take Brigham's to court. Mr. Greeley suggested that Brighams should bring in photographs of signs in other historic districts. Mr. Greeley stated that one of the most offensive things in signs is multicolors.
