June 30, 1976
A meeting of the Historic Districts Commission was held on Wednesday,
June 30, 1976, in the Selectmen's Meeting Room. Present were Commissioners
Wilbur h1. Jaquith, Chairman; Georgia H. Williams, Secretary; S. Lawrence
Whipple; and Associate Commissioners Ruth B. Adams serving for Commissioner-
Thomas J. Holzbog, John R. Packard for Commissioner Amalia G. Samoylenko,
and Oliver F. Hooper.
At 8:25 P.M. a hearing was held on the application of Anthony J. and
Maria Bartolotti for a Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to exte-
rior changes to the dwelling at 1132 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within
the Eas~Village District. David Walsh, Esq. attended with hir. Bartolotti.
Charles Schock of 8 Marrett Road was also present. Mr. Walsh submitted one
set of scale drawings. It is proposed to construct a family room. at the
rear of the building with no portion to extend beyond the present elevations
of the dwelling, basement and first floor room with fireplace. This will
not be visible from Massachusetts Avenue or Marrett Road. They propose to
remove an existing porch and three windows in the kitchen and replace with
a 28'-4" x 31'-2" addition and deck leading into the addition. The chimney
will be brick, the roof will basically be a hip roof, gray wide clapboards,
asphalt shingle roof to match existing shingles and the chimney will be
painted white. It was agreed that members of the Commission would meet with
the architect, Atty. Walsh, and the Bartolottis on July 14th. The hearing
was adjourned at 9:30 P.ht.
An adjourned hearing was held at 9:35 P.hI. with Ms. Jean Holtey of The
Threaded Needle whose sign's letters had turned reddish when varnished.
hlr. Jaquith stated that the Commission had tried unsuccessfully to get the
owner of the building in to discuss the standard signs which they had set.
hls. Holtey submitted a drawing showing needle logo with letters and needle
in gold leaf and thread in red. She also submitted a sketch for a parking
sign. hir. Jaquith stated that, since it was a free standing sign, it would
require a hearing before the Board of appeals and that that Board would be
more likely to issue a permit to the building owner than a tenant. The
hearing was adjourned at 10:15 P.M. until August 14th.
Additional discussion was held concerning repairing of the brick wall
at Ye Olde Burying Ground. Mr. Whipple stated that the wall has likely been
rebuilt at least once and that the original capping was probably brick.
Then followed a discussion on lighting of the flagpole. hir. Jaquith
has been advised that they are testing different light intensities and spot-
lights in different spots. hlr. Whippel said that the lightinf should be
subtle and that one on pole is better than three in the ground of the Green.
Discussion followed on directional signs for the Methodist and Greek
Orthodox Churches. The Town Engineering Department has advised the Metho-
dist Church to make another sign and they will put it up. There are three
directional signs including the Greek Orthodist Church sign at the corner
of Meriam Street.
hlr. Jaquith stated that the Board of Appeals had denied the free stand-
ing sign for Jefferson Union Company at 789 Massachusetts Avenue so that
closes that application. h1r. Jaquith said that he would like to hold this
open for 3 to 4 months.
