A meeting of the Historic Districts Commission was held at 7:45 P.M. on
Wednesday, April 21, 1976, in the Selectmen's Meeting Room. Present were
Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Chairman; Georgia H. Williams, Secretary;
S. Lawrence Whipple; and Associate Commissioners Oliver F. Hooper who was
appaointed to fill the vacancy, and Ruth B. Adams who was appointed to serve
for Commissioner Thomas J. Holzbog.
A hearing was held at 7:55 P.M. on the application of Jean Holtey and
Magda Figwer d/b/a The Threaded Needle for a Certificate with respect to the
erection of a sign on the building at 1620 Massachusetts Avenue, which is
within the Battle Green District. The 5'8: long sign will be hung on the
far right of the porch. Following discussion of the sign having changed
color when polyurethane was painted Aver the gold leaf letters and logo ,
the hearing was adjourned at 8:25 P.M. to May 5th.
At 8:25 P.M. a hearing was held on the application of Walter Judge d/b/a
Interiors Unlimited was held with respect to the erection of a sign on the
building at 32 Waltham Street, whichis within the Battle Green District.
Following discussion of the drawings presented, the hearing was closed at
9:00 P.M.
At 9:05 P.hl. a hearing was held on the application of Ong Ong, Inc. for
a Certificate with respect to changes to the exterior and erection of a sign
on the building at 21-25 Depot Square, which premises are within the Battle
Green District. Mr. Bortman discussed the proposed awning of either green
or terracotta to be erected over the front entrance. It was stated that a
ramp for-handicapped people has to be installed, a new service door from
Depot Place, and exhaust pipes are needed. The sign to read "Yangtze River
Restaurant" will match the other signs on the building and will be located
above the 2nd to 5th bays. The hearing was adjourned at 11:00 P.M.
Mr. Jaquith stated that he is considering the "hardship" clause for use
in approving a new flagpole for the Battle Green.
It was VOTED to issue Certificates for signs to Jerry Slack d/b/a The
Cycle Loft, Carrigg and Erickson, and Walter judge d/b/a Interiors Unlimited.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:45 P.M.
