Present weee Commis- sionsioners Wilbur bi. Jaquith, Chairman; Georgia H. Williams, Secretary; Thomas J. Holzbog; Donald J. Shaw; S. Lawrence Whipple; and Associate Com- missioner Oliver F. Hooper. At 8:10 P.M. a hearing was held on the application of Paul J. McCormack with respect to a hanging sign on the building at 1620 bassachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle Green District. Following discussion on the hanging of the sign which would have to be done with rigid brackets and of the design of the sign, the hearing was adjourned at 8:20 P.M. At 8:20 P.M. a hearing was held on the application of Christos Kontos for a sign at One 6leriam Street which would have 10" high Roman style let- ters of 23 kt. gold leaf. Ernest Giroux, owner of the building, stated that he wants the sign to conform to others on the building. The hearing was adjourned at 8:26 P.M. At 8:27 P.bi. a hearing was held on the application of Kim C. Fillmore d/b/a The Toad Stool Boutique. Since drawings were not ready, this was adjourned at 8:30 P.bl. until the next meeting. Elizabeth Reinhardt of 10 Eliot Road, a member of the Historical Com- mission, appeared to discuss the Revolutionary Monument on the Green. Mrs. Williams stated that the original marker is at the Hancock-Clarke House. Mr. Whipple said that it is of smooth slate, not cracked, 3" thick, but that the edges were broken. The letters are very legible. It is possible that this marker could be used again, but the ultimate decision on using again would be up to the Historical Society. Then followed a brief discussion of the flagpole on the Green. The base is rotten, and so far John McSweeney has not been able to find a replacement flagpole. At 9:00 P.M. a hearing was held on the application of John Nicoloro d/b/a Roberta's Creative Craft Supply with respect to the erection of a sign on the store at 848 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the East Village District. The background would be white to match others on the building, and the letters would be black. James Freeman, representing Jefferson Onion the new owners of the building, stated that he likes the idea of uniformity of signs. The hearing was adjourned at 9:30 P.M. Mr. Jaquith stated that an extension has been received from Amalia Samoylenko with respect to the building at 10-12 Muzzey Street. • February 11, 1976 - page 2 Mr. Jaquith said that it was not possible to find out what happened in the Building Department with respect to issuing of a Permit to Brigham's. He said that Donald Irwin feels that the Building Department does not con- trol change of legend on a sign unless it is in a Historic District. Atty. Norman Cohen, Town Counsel, told bir. Irwin to revoke the Permit, and this was done. Mr. Jaquith said that he could live with "Brigham's" and the other words but not with the red, white, and blue garlands. Mrs. Williams said that, when looking at the sign, she feels the Commission cannot do anything about this sign. It was moved, seconded, and VOTED to issue a Certificate to Christos Kontos for a sign at One Meriam Street. It was moved, seconded, and VOTED to issue a Certificate to John Nicoloro for a sign at 848 hassachusetts Avenue. It was moved, seconded, and VOTED to issue a Certificate to the Church of Our Redeemer with respect to replacement of the existing slate shingles on the roofs of the main house and part of the ell and the existing asphalt shingles on the remainder of the dwelling with Moire Black asphalt shingles. The dwelling is the Rectory at 1888 Massachusetts Avenue. It was moved, seconded, and VOTED to issue a ~~*~ficate to F. Wm. Smith with respect to the additions to the existing dwellings and the erec- tion of additional units and garages and a carport comprising part of an 11-unit condominium complex on the premises at 1009-1049 Massachusetts Ave- nue, which is within the East Village District. A bill for $53.75 from Barbara Gilson was presented and payment was VOTED. The meeting adjourned .at 10:55 P.hl. Georgia H. Williams Secretary
