HomeMy WebLinkAbout1975-10-15 i • s HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMLSSION A meeting of the Historic Districts Commission was held on Wednesday, Octo- ber is, 147,5, in the Selectmen's Meeting Room, Town Office Building, Lexington. Present were Wilbur M. Jaquith, Chairman; Georgia H. Williams. Secretary; Thomas J. Holzbog; Donald J. Shaw; S. Lawrence Whipple; and Associate Commissioner Oliver F, Hooper. A hearing was held at 7s55 P,M, on the application of the Lexington Mews Trust for a Certificate with respect to the enclosure of the court-yard on the premises at 10 Muzzey Street, which is within the Battle Green District, A~.r, Jaquith read the legal notice and application, Mrs. Amelia G. Samaylenko, Trustee, submitted three scale drawings of the proposed enclosure which showed a store Front of glass with anodized aluminum at the bottom. Mrs. Samoylenko said that the glass wall would be about 3' back of the 6` fence which would be retained. Mr, Shaw said that he does not like the facade of glass and would like to see the same type wail as on the front and rear of the building on the premises. Mr, Holzbog suggested that this be made a two-story addition and said that he does not feel that a glass facade with a flat roof are appropriate for this area. He said that he did not feel that this proposed plan would look well with the building on the premises. Mrs. Samoylenka said that she wanted to en- close the court-yard because of a problem with ice and snow on the interior walk- way and also because of a problem with vandalism when the building is closed. Mr, Jaquith asked if there was any problem with vandalism when the building is open and Mrs. Samoylenko said that there was not too much problem, In answer to a question as to material to be used on the roof, Mrs, Samoylenko said that it would be basically of tar and gravel. Regarding the problem of vandalism. Mr. Whipple suggested that she enclose the corridor with glass partitions to keep people out when the building was closed, Mrs, Samoylenko said that she would rethink the problem and present another proposal to the Commission, The hearing was adjourned at 8s40 P.M, A hearing was held at 8s40 P.M. on the application of David L. and Marianne H. Brown for a Certificate with respect to the erection of a one-story carriage house on the premises at 1454 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Munroe fiavern District. Mr, Jaquith read the legal notice and application. In addition to Mr. and Mrs. Brown, Mr. Brown's father, Marjorie McNicholas of 5 Rowland Ave- nue, Edward Hamlin of 2 Rowland Avenue, and Mra, Joseph Weerts of 1905 Massachu- setts Avenue were present. Mr, Brown submitted three sets of scale drawings of the proposed carriage house, a plot plan of the premises, and photo raphs of the dwelling. He stated that the house has 4" aluminum siding with 2 1~2" corner- boards. He said that the gutters would be of baked white aluminum. There would be a woad door on the rear of the carriage hoes®, no windows, and two overhead garage type doors on the Rowland Avenue side of the carriage house. The wood doors would all be painted black. Mr, Whipple asked why they were using a hip roof with a cupola and Mr. Brown said that the roof is in the style of the house which was built about 1903. Mr, Whipple stated that cupolas were not in style at that time but were used on barns built in the 1844s and 1854s, Mr, Brown said that he likes the style of the proposed carriage house and that he feels that a HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION - page 2 October 15, 1975 cupola would add to the attractiveness of the carriage house. Mr, Holzbog said that he felt the cupola should be wider, Mr, Brown said that they had purchased a Town Crier type of weathervane in Williamsburg for the top of the cupola. He said that the aluminum siding on the house is an off white and showed a sample of the siding, He said that the cupola would be of wood with a copper top. A light will be installed between the doors and an illustration will be submitted to the Commission when the fixture is chosen, He said that the driveway is already blacktopped, Mr, Jaquith asked the members of the Commission if they had any objections to the proposed plans and none were expressed. Mr, Jaquith told Mr, Brown that the Commission would issue a Certificate with a condition that the dimensions of the cupola and a brochure showing the light fixture would have to be submitted to and approved by the Commission prior to installation. The hearing was closed at 9:15 P,M, It was stated that the application of F. William Smith for the changes in the premises at 1037-id39 and 1009 Massachusetts Avenue would expire prior to the November 5th meeting. A letter to Mr, Smith advising him of this and asking that he extend his application was dictated - the letter also specified the in- formation that the Commission needed to act on his application. It was moved, seconded, and unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate of Ap- propriateness to the Lexington Minute Men, Inc. for the erection and display of signs on the premises at 1314 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Munroe Tavern District, subject to receipt of revised design of the sign panel and park- ing sign. Participating in this decision were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Georgia H, Williams, Thomas J. Holzbog, Donald J. Shaw, and S. Lawrence Whipple, It was moved, seconded, and unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate of Ap- propriateness to Lawrence B, and Sarah W, Hunt with respect to a change in color of the dwelling and barn at $ Hancock Avenue, which is within the Hancock-Clarke District. Participating in this decision were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Georgia H. Williams, Thomas J. Holzbog, Donald J. Shaw, and S, Lawrence Whipple. It was moved, seconded, aril unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate of Ap- propriateness to David L, and Marianne H. Brown with respect to the erection of a carriage house on the premises at 1454 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Munroe Tavern District, Participating in this decision were Commissioners Wilbur M, Jaquith, Georgia H, Williams, Thomas J, Holzbog, Donald J.
