HomeMy WebLinkAbout1975-10-08 r Y HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION A meeting of the Historic Districts Commission was held on Wednesday, Octo- ber 8, 1975 in Room G15, Town Office Building. Lexington, at 8x00 P.M. Present were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Chairman; Georgia H. Williams, Secretary= Donald J. Shaw; S, Lawrence Whipple; and Associate Commissioner Ruth B. Adams. Mrs. Adams was appointed to serve for Commissioner Thomas J. Holzbog who was un- able to be present. A discussion was held on the application of F. William Smith for changes in the exterior architectural features of the premises at 1037-1039 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the East Village District. The question was raised as to whether or not a building permit had been issued for the replacement of the windows and the replacement of the roof and, if so, why was a permit issued with- out a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Historic Districts Commission hav- ing been issued. It was stated that a building permit may not have been neces- sary for the interior work and that one may not have been issued for the exterior changes made so far. Mr, Shaw said that he feels that the roof over the doorway which Mr, Smith wishes to remove is too heavy for the small windows that have been installed, and he stated that he felt removal of the ells was acceptable, A discussion was held on the application of F, William Smith for maintenance of the fences and electrical boxes for the Russell Square Condominiums at 1505 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Munroe Tavern District. Mr, Shaw said that he did not ob,jeet to the fences but felt that the electrical box which is most visible should be screened. It was moved, seconded, and unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate of Appropriateness to F. William Smith with respect to the maintenance of fences and electrical boxes for the Russell Square Condomin- iums at 1505 Massaohusetts Avenue, which is within the Munroe Tavern District. Participating in this decision were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Georgia H. Williams, Donald J. Shaw, S. Lawrence Whipple, and Associate Commissioner Ruth B. Adams, A discussion was held on the application of the Lexington Minute Men, Inc, with respect to the parking sign on the premises at 1314 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Munroe Tavern District. Mr, Shaw said that he felt the sign was too high and in the wrong location, He said that he felt a sign 3 1/2 to 4' from ground level would be more appropriate, Then followed a discussion on the application of Joseph Castilla d/b/a The Village Cobbler with respect to the erection and display of a sign on the store at 16 Waltham Street, which is within the Battle Green District, Mr, Whipple said that he felt the lettsrs are weak, It was stated that additional informa- tion is needed from Mr, Castilla before action can be taken on this application. A discussion was held on the installation of blacktopping at Norton, IQeven & Co. premises at 3 Fletcher Avenue, which is within the Battle Green District. T~.r, Jaquith stated that he had looked at the premises and that there is landscap- ing in front of the building, Mr, Jaquith, Mrs. Williams, and Mr, Shaw all said that they felt the blacktopping installed was acceptable so it was decided that no action would be taken on this matter, r HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION - page 2 October 8, 19?5 A discussion was held on the tower of the Cary Library. Mr. Shaw said that he thought the new slats help a little. Mr. Whipple asked if another color paint would help. Mr. Jaquith, Mrs, Williams, and Mrs. Adams all said that they felt a darker color paint would help, It was moved, seconded, and unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate of Ap- propriateness to the Burlington Bank and Trust Company d/b/a Old Colony Bank with respect to changes in the building at 5 Depot Square, which is within the Battle Green District. It was moved, seconded, and unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate of Appropriateness to the Burlington Bank and Trust Company d/b/a Old Colony Bank with respect to the erection and display of a sign for the store at 5 Depot Square, which is within the Battle Green District. Participating in these decisions were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Georgia H. Williams, Donald J. Shaw, S. Lawrence Whipple, and Associate Commissioner Ruth B. Adams. It was moved, seconded., and unanimously VOTED to issue a Permit for Demoli- tion or Removal to F. William Smith for the demolition or removal of portions of the dwelling at 1037-1039 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the East Village District. Participating in this decision were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Georgia H. Williams, Donald J. Shaw, S, Lawrence Whipple, and Associate Commis- sioner Ruth B. Adams.
