HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION
A meeting of the Historic Districts Commission was held on Wednesday,
September 24, 1975. in Room 111, Town Office Building, Lexington. Present
were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Chairman; Georgia H. Williams, Secre-
tary= Donald J, Shaw: and Associate Commissioners Ruth B. Adams and Amelia
G. 5amoylenko. Mrs. Adams was appointed to serve for Commissioner Thomas
J. Holzbog who was unable to be present, Mrs. 5amoylenko was appointed to
serve for Commissioner S. Lawrence Whipple who was unable to be present.
A hearing was held at 8:00 P.M. on the application of Francis G. and
Barbara W. Fuery fora Certificate with respect to changes in color of the
dwelling at b?'8 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the East Village Dis-
trict. Mr. Jaquith read the application, The house is at the corner of
Massachusetts Avenue and Pleasant Street and is naw a charcoal gray color.
The house is wood although the ell is aluminum siding, They would like to
change the color of the house from gray to a rustic Brown, Mr. Fuery said
that he had looked into painting aluminum sidinn and submitted a Letter
from Peter's Painting of Lexington stating that it could be done. Mrs,
Fuery said that she had talked with Bix Shoemaker and he also said that
aluminum siding could be painted. They will use a latex paint as that is
batter on aluminum siding. They would Like to paint the house a dark
brown, the window sash and muntins a pewter color, and retain the red door
and white doorway. It was decided that more investigation should be done
with respect to painting over aluminum siding. The hearing was adjourned
at 8x30 P.M.
A meeting was held at 8a30 P.M, with Elizabeth Reinhardt, Chairman of
the Historical Commission, and Ann Grady, a member of the Commission, Mrs.
Reinhardt said that they have completed inventorying all houses and build-
ings over 50 years old in the Historic Districts with the exception of the
center of Lexington. Mrs, Grady spoke briefly about a Historic Districts
Seminar she had attended on September 20th and said that Robert Neiley had
recommended five things in his talk which are as follows: 1) publish
guidelines - it was stated that those of Savannah, Georgia were the best;
2) deal successfully with the press; 9) teach local architectural history
in the schools; 4) praise someone who has done a good ,job improving or re-
storing property; 5) offer free advice, Mrs, Reinhardt shaved the forms
that they have bean filling out as they irsventoried the properties and said
that these would be filed with the Massachusetts Historical Commission as
soon as copies have been made for the Commission's files. The meeting was
adjourned at 10:00 P.M.
An application from Sarah W. Hunt for a Certificate with respect to
changing the color of the trim on their dwelling at 8 Hancock Avenue, which
is within the Hancock-Clarks District, was read, The house is being re-
painted the same color but they would like to change the trim, eaves, etc,
to white. It was moved, seconded, and unanimously VOTED to issue a Certifi-
cate of Appropriateness to Lawrence B, and Sarah W. Hunt with respect to a
change in color of the trim of the dwelling at 8 Haneoek Avenue, which is
within the Hancock-Clarke District. Participating in this decision were
Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Georgia H. Williams, Donald J. Shaw, and
Associate Commissioners Ruth B. Adams and Amelia G. Samoylenko.

Mr. Jaquith submitted new drawings for the Old Colony Bank showing a
change in the window design where they propose to install the night deposi-
tory. They propose to paint the concrete around the depository black and
then face with glass with white muntins matching those in the upper two
sections of the window. Mr. Shaw stated that he would vote against in-
stalling anight depository in any of the windows and stated that it could
be installed in the recessed doorway on the side facing Massachusetts Ave-
nue. Mr. Shaw, Mrs. Williams, and Mrs. Samoylenko all said that they were
opposed to installing the depository in the window and requested the Chair-
man to so inform the architect. It was felt that the proposed sign would
be all right.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:15 P.M.
