September 1~, 19?5. in the Selectmen's Meeting Room, Town Office Building,
Lexington. Present were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Chairman; Georgia
H. Williams, Secretary; Thomas J. Holzbogs and Associate Commissioners Ruth
B, Adams and Amalie G. Samoylenko. Mrs. Adams was appointed to serve for
Commissioner Donald J. Shaw who was unable to be present. Mrs. Samoylenko
was appointed to serve for Commissioner S. Lawrence Whipple who was unable
to be present,
A hearing was held at 752 P.M. on the application of the Burlington
Bank and Trust Company d/b/a Old Colony Bank for a Certificate with respect
to changes in the exterior architectural features of the building and for a
sign for the building at 5 Depot Square, which is within the Battle Green
District, Representing the Bank were Peter Carberry of Cole & Carberry,
Architects; John P. DiIorio, Presidents Bernard P, Murphy, Senior Viae Pres-
ident & Treasurer; and John P. Prosser, Assistant Vice President of the
First National Bank Realty Corporation. Mr. Carberry submitted three scale
drawings showing proposed changes and the proposed sign. The store current-
ly has two doorways and they want to eliminate one and move the other into
the center portion of that part of the building elevation so that there
would be three windows on either side of the doorway. A muntined window
matching the existing muntined windows would be installed to replace one of
the doorways. The new doorway would consist of a pair of 3' wide doors
which would be recessed 2' and would be of natural aluminum anodized doors
with matching door frame. The Bank also wishes to install a night deposi-
tory in the window closest to the railroad traoks. This window would have
two muntined window sash at the top with the two lower sash replaced by the
night depository installed in the center of the area with stone on either
side of the depository framing and mortor in line with the muntins in the
windows above. The depository door and frame would be of stainless steel
standard construction and would open into a standard chute leading into a
storage chest. Mr. Holzbog suggeatsd that they use something like bullet-
proof glass around the depository with wood muntins so that the window con-
figuration would not be too badly spoiled. Mr. Jaquith asked if th®y could
cover the stone or granite around the depository opening with glass to give
a window effect. Mr. Murphy said that they were afraid of vandalism and,
if glass were used, it could be broken and the chute and chest pulled out
with certain types of equipment. Mr. DiIorio said that he thought possibly
they could work on the problem of trying to make the window look more like
the other windows. It was stated that the words "Night Deposit" would be
engraved in the door as it is a standard item. Mr. Holzbog asked if the
sign lettering were a logo lettering or if there were other types of let-
tering that oould be used, Mr. Murphy said that this is the style of let-
tering that they are using with all of their signs. Mr. Carberry said that
the letters would be aluminum painted a dark Flaropon "John Brown" paint.
The symbol on the left side of the sign as you face it is of cut aluminum
covered with gold leaf and the letters on the opposite side of the sign are
square cut also of gold leaf. The plaque logo is molded fiberglass in gold
leaf on a white background and is 29" x 15". The hearing was adjourned at
9s05 P.M.
