Present were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Chairman; Georgia. H. Williams, Secretary; Thomas J. Holzbog; Donald J. Shaw; and Associate Com- missioner Oliver F. Hooper. Mr. Hooper was appointed to serve for Commis- sioner S. Lawrence Whipple who was unable to be present. A hearing was held at 8;00 P.M. on the application of Philip John and Julie Cadle for a Certificate with respect to exterior architectural changes in the dwelling at 15 Mariam Street, which is within the Battle Green Dis- trict. Mr. Jaquith read the legal notice and application. Mr. Cadle sub- mitted one sketch of the single pane wood frame Anderson thermopane window they propose to install on the Oakland Street elevation of the dwelling. An aluminum channel will be installed around the wood frame casement window. The hearing was closed at 8:05 P.M. A hearing was held at 8x08 P.M. on the application of H. Gordon Buchanan d/b/a Buchanan Real Estate for a Certificate with respect to the erection and display of a sign on the building at 1620 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle Green District. Mr. Jaquith read the legal no- tice and application. Mr. Buchanan submitted a drawing of a sign which would be suspended on the left front elevation of the building. The sign would be 5' long x 10" high and would have a 1" bevel around the board. The sign would have a white background with 3" black letters painted on the sign- board, Mr. Jaquith asked if this would fit on a directory sign if this is the type of sign that eventually is approved for this building. Mr. Holzbog suggested a dark background with white letters and white bevel edge for the sign, William Dailey, representing the owners of the property, arrived at this point and he stated that an application had been submitted to the Board of Appeals for a free-standing sign for the property. He asked how the Com- mission would feel about five separate signs. Mr. Shaw said that ha thought it would be possible to erect two signs on each side of the doorway and one where the "Attic Secrets" sign is currently hanging. Mr. Hooper said that he would prefer this to a directory sign on the lawn. Mr. Dailey said that, if having five hanging signs above the front railings of the building is preferred and acceptable to all, he would withdraw the application currently before the Board of Appeals and submits new application for five signs to be suspended from the roof of the porch. Mr, Buchanan decided that he would have a 5' x 10" matte black background sign with 3" gold painted letters to be susperxled from the porch roof for the present time. The hearing was ad- 3ourned at 9:15 P.M. Robert Callahan and Frederick Pohl of Lexington Carvers & Signmakers met with the Commission to discuss the palette sign for The Minute Shop. Mr. Jaquith and Mr. Holzbog both said that they preferred the sign between the windows. Mr, Jaquith asked why they needed three brushes on the sign and they said that this was what they felt would look best. Mr, Hooper sug- gested that they bend them and make them look like flat brushes and that they curve the ends of the brushes. HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION - page 2 June w, 1975 A hearing was held at 9s20 P.M. on the applioation of Driscoll Jewelers for a Certificate with respect to the erection and display of signs for the store at 1727 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle Green District, Mr. Jaquith read the legal notice and applioation. Mr. Callahan submitted three scale drawings and color chips of the two proposed signs. Mr. Jaquith discussed the CVS plan to install their sign within the transom area and asked if this could be done with the front elevation sign. Mr. Callahan said that the length was within the transom area but that the proposed sign was 9" too high to be within this area, but that the sign could be cut down so as to be within the transom area. The sign backboard would be baked whits alumi- num with a brilliant blue border. The letters for the words "J. J. Driscoll" would be 12" and 6" in height and would be a light blue color with brilliant blue outline. The letters for the words "Hal7sne.rk Cards" would be 5 1/2" and 2" in height and those for "Gifts & Jewelry" would be 5 1/2" and 3 1/2" in height and all of these letters would be a brilliant blue color. The crown over "Hallmark Cards" is to be of gold.
