A hearing was held at 9:20 P.M. on the application of Mary E. Washburn
for a Certificate with respect to the erection and display of a sign for
the store at 1620 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle Green
District, Also present were Mr. Washburn; William Dailey and Paul McCormack,
representing the owners of the property] and H. Gordon Buchanan who has also
applied for a Certificate for the erection and display of a sign on this
building. Mr. Jaquith read the legal notice and application and stated that
this is a hearing on a sign for one store only. Mr. Dailey said that they
would like a general idea for permanent signs. Mrs. Washburn submitted draw-
ings and showed the backboard she proposes to use. The letters for "Attie
Secrets" would be 2" in height and the letters for "Antiques" aril "Art" would
be 3" in height. The letters are to be of raised gold leaf, Mrs, Washburn
said that she would like to put the sign on the railing as her store is on
the second floor in the rear and the sign would not be visible from the street
if in the area of her store. Mr. McCormack said that they would prefer not
to have arLq signs on the second floor and asked if this sign could be hung up
opposite to the "Hearth & Homespun" sign until permanent signs have been de-
cided upon. Mr. Dailey then discussed the possibility of a directory sign
set at right angles to the building with "1620" at the top and all tenants
listed on the double faced 3" x 5' free-standing sign. Mr. McCormack said
that he did not like the idea of a light on the sign but would consider the
possibility of a pole type lantern close by, Mr. Dailey said that he would i
suggest using black letters on a white backboard for afree-standing direc- i
tort' sign. Mr. Jaquith said that there are three types of free-standing signsa
solid panel backboard with painted letters, removable panels, and removable ~
sliding panels. Mr. Dailey said that there would be a total of five signs ~
on a directory sign - "Hearth & Homespun", "Attic Secrets", and "Buchanan Real
Estate", and two more, Mr. Jaquith said that there is a problem in issuing
Certificates for temporary signs. Mr. Shaw suggested that the "Hearth & Home-
spun" sign remain where temporarily hung, that the "Attie Secrets" sign be
hung where the "Original Handcrafts" sign is hung, and that the "Buchanan"
sign could be suspended on the opposite sid®. Mr. Whipple suggested that they
emphasize the "1b20", The hearing was adjourned at 10215 F.M.
