HomeMy WebLinkAbout1974-12-11 HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION A meeting of the Historic Districts Commission was held on Wednesday, December 11, 1974r in the Selectmen's Meeting Room, Town Office Building, Lexington, Present were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Chairman, who did not serve; Georgia H, Williams, Secretary= Donald J, Shaw; S. Lawrence Whipple; and Associate Commissioners Ruth B, Adams, Oliver F, Hooper, and Amalia G, Samoylenko. It was moved, seconded, and VOTED that Donald J, Shaw serve as Chairman Pro Tem, Mrs, Adams was appointed to serve for Commis- sioner Wilbur M, Jaquith who did not participate in the meeting aril Mr, Hooper was appointed to serve for Commissioner Thomas J, Holzbog who was un- able to be present, A hearing was held at 8:15 P,M, on the application for a Certificate of Amalia G, Samoylenko et al~, Trustees of The Lexington Mews Trust with re- spect to the erection anti display of a directory sign for the building at 1A Muzzey Street, which is within the Battle Green District. ~'irr, Shaw read the legal notice and application, Mrs, Samoylenko submitted three copies of a plot plan showing location of the proposed directory sign and three copies of the design for the directory sign. The letters are to be Roman style let- ters with serifs. It was questioned whether white letters were acceptable for the Massachusetts Avenue elevation and Mrs, Samoylenko said that she is getting an estimate for gold painted (not gold leaf) letters, She said that all directory sign panels on the Forest Street elevation will be the same size, 4" x 30", in the future and that the panels will have gold leaf, in- cised letters, All parts of the sign except for the lettering will be paint- ed Cabot "Cordovan Brown" Stain, The "Cinema II" and "10 Muzzey" sign let- ters on the Massachusetts Avenue elevation will be white letters which seem ~ "stark" compared to the other gold leaf signs on the building and directory, Mrs, Samoylenko said that more shrubs will be added in the spring around the signboard and she believes that this will improve the stark appearance of the sign, It was voted that a Certificate be approved, The hearing was ad- 3ourned at 8:30 P,M, There was a discussion about the "Freddie Toys" sign on the brick store in the East Village, Mr, Shaw asked if anything had been done about this, Mr, Jaquith said that Assistant Building Inspector Kelly was to have requested that the sign be removed and it may have been removed by now, A hearing was held at 8:45 P,M, on the application of Lexmil Theatres, Inc, for a Certificate with respect to the erection and display of a sign for the theatre at 10 Muzzey Street, which is within the Battle Green Dis- trict. Mr. Shaw read the legal notice and application from Guy Feeley, Mrs, Samoylenko represented the applicant and said that they were asking for a Certificate to change the name of the theatre from "Mews Art Cinema" to "Cinema II", using the same backboard and the same style letters, It was voted to approve issuance of a Certificate, The hearing was closed at 9s10 PM. • HISTORIC DISTRICTS CONA9ISSION - page 2 December 11, 1974 Mrs, Adams withdrew and Mrs, Samoylenko was appointed to serve on the following hearing, A hearing was held at 9:15 P,M, on the application of Consumer Value Stores for a Certificate with respect to changes in the ex- terior architectural features of the store front of the building at 1719- 1'721 Massachusetts Avenue and for the erection and display of signs for the store at said location, which is within the Battle Green District, Mr, Shaw read the legal notice and application, David Teolis, Construction Super- visor for Consumer Value Stores, represented the applicant, Mr, Teolis sub- mitted°three front elevation drawings showing .change from two existing stores to one store front, They plan to remove the two existing entrance doors and replace with one entrance door on the western side of the existing support pilaster, There would be two surfaces of a brown color baked enamel on lead interior-form panels for "Alliance" Wall to the left of the new dbuble~glass entrance doors, Above the Alliance Wall panels is 1~2" safety glass in black Duranodic Tubing, After reviewing the proposed alterations, the Commission expressed dissatisfaction with the amount of plastic, the "Alliance" Wall of baked enamel, which is designed to conceal the checkout counter from view from the street, Also, it was suggested that the store entrance would be more attractive if 3t could be placed at the existing Driscoll store entrance so that the store sign placement could be improved, The proposed sign of 4' with 3' letters is not permitted under the existing Sign By-Law, The hearing was adjourned at 10:40 P,M.
