A meeting of the Historic Districts Commission was held on Wednesday,
July 17, 1974, in the Selectmen's Meeting Room, Town Office Building, Lexing-
ton, Present were Commissioners Wilbur M, Jaquith, Chairman= Georgia H,
Williams, Secretary= Donald J, Shawl S, Lawrence Whipplei and Associate Com-
missioner Amalia G. Samoylenko. Mrs, Samoylenko was appointed to serve for
Commissioner Thomas J. Hol2bog who was unable to be present,
A hearing was held at 8s00 P,M. on the application of Jeffrey Bromberg
for a Certificate with respect to the erection and display of a sign for the
store at 1841 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle Green Distri.et.
Mr. Jaquith read the legal notice and application. Mr. Jaquith stated that
the Board of Appeals had granted a permit for use as a restaurant sub3eat to
sign approval by the Historic Districts Commission. Mr. Carl Severo submitted
three scale drawings of the proposed sign, The hearing was closed at 8s05 P,M,
A hearing was held at 8sOg P,M, on the application of Peking Gardens for
a Certificate with respect to exterior architectural changes in the building
at 27 Waltham Street, which is within the Battle Green District, Mr, Jaquith
read the legal notice and application, Atty, Dean Nicholson represented the
applicant and submitted three scale drawings showing location and design of
the windows to be installed and photographs of that elevation of the building,
He said that the purpose was to provide cross ventilation to the kitchen. The
two 4 window units would match the existing window. Louis Spencer of 55 Wal-
tham Street said that he had no objection to the installation of the windows.
The hearing was closed at 8s20 P.M.
An informal discussion was held with Atty. Nicholson regarding the ap-
plication of Carlton House Trust for the erection of fencing and it was de-
termined that the scheduled hearing should be held,
A hearing was held at 8s40 P.M. on the application of Baskin-Robbins,
Inc. fora Certificate with respect to changes in the exterior architectural
features of and the erection and display of a sign on the building at 1729
Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle Green District. Mr, Jaquith
read the legal notice and application. Richard E. Fasano, Store Planning
Manager, submitted three scale drawings showing the proposed store front and
sign aril also photographs of the existing building. Also present were Alan
Seligman and Solomon H. Rubin, owners of the building. Three different store
front possibilities were shown on the drawing, Mr, Whippl® asked how far out
the hood would project and Mr, Fasano said 8", Mr, Whipple asked if the
awning pro~eation would be the same and Mr, Fasano said that it would be,
Mr, Shaw asked about the pro3ection variance with Mario's and Mr, Jaquith
said 5 1/2" Following considerable discussion, it was decided that the second
design was preferred by the mafority of the members and also by the applicant,
It was agreed that the windows and doors would be of wood and would have solid
permanent wood muntins, Mr, Jaquith asked about air conditioning and Mr,
Fasano said that the air conditioner would be inside the building but that
there would be a condestser on the roof which would not be visible from the

street or parking lot. Mr. Fasano said that they wanted an awning hood and
an awning. He submitted a pink and white stripe awning sample which was not
acceptable to the members of the Commission and he was asked to submit other
awning samples. He said that there would be no changes above the lighting
cove. Throe scale drawings of the proposed sign were submitted. The sign
is to be 12" in height with cut out dark brown plexiglas letters with rounded
edges; the brown color to match the sample submitted, The figures "31" in
the center of the logo are to be of pink plexiglas and the logo is to be of
the same brown color plexiglas and have 31 white plexiglas dots, The logo,
which is located in the center of the sign, is oval in shape. The sign is to
be 15'6" in length and oentered vertically on the 17'9" store front. The
hearing was adjourned at 10s00 P.M.
A hearing was held at SOs05 P. M. on the application of Carlton House
Trust for a Certificate with respect to the eroction of fenoing on the pro-
mises at 19 Muzzey Street, which is within the Battle Green District. Mr.
Jaquith read the legal notioe and application, Atty. Dean Nieholson~epro-
sented the applicant, He stated that Certificate No. 70 C-4 issued by the
Commission on January 21, 1970 approved installation of a 4' rail f®nce or
chain link fencing and that this had been amended by Certificate No. 71 C-23
issued by the Commission on July 23, 1971 which permitted installation of a
stockade fence along the boundary line on the Raymond Street elevation of
the property. He stated that they would like to extend this type of stockade
f®nce across the rear boundary line of the premises. The hearing was closed
at 1Os25 P.M.
Mr. Jaquith stated that an application had been received from the Lexing-
ton Historical Society with rospect to moving the Hancock-Clarke House from
35 Haneook Street to 36 Haneoek Street. He stated that a hearing on this
application had been scheduled for Thursday, August 1, 1974.
Mr, Jaquith read an application from Joseph B. Palmer for a Certificate
with respect to ohange in color of the dwelling at 1$08 Massachusetts Avenue,
which is within the Munroe Tavern District and submitted a sample of the blue
gray color they propose to paint the body of the house. The members of the
Commission were requested to look at the side of the house already painted
to determine if the color was satisfactory.
The question of the electrical apparatus attached to the right hand side
of the lighting fixture rather than behind the hood of the sign for Patriot
Travel at 1860 Massachusetts Avenue was discussed. Mr, Shaw moved that
the owner of the store rectify this and that the Chairman of the Commission
be authorized to write him to do so. Seconded by Mr, Whiple and unanimously
VOTID,
Mr, Jaquith stated that the Board of Appeals had approved the erection
of a double faced standing sign for Rave Chevrolet, Inc. at 33 Bedford Street
but that the Commission had not yet received an application for such a s3.gn.

It was moved, seconded, and unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate of
Appropriateness to Jeffrey Bromberg with respect to the erection and display
of a sign for the store at 1&11 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the
Battle Green District. Participating in this decision were Commissioners
Wilbur M. Jaquith, Georgia H. Williams, Donald J. Shaw, S. Lawrence Whipple,
and Associate Commissioner Amelia G. Samoylenko.
It was moved, seconded, and unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate of
Appropriateness to Carlton House Trust with respect to the erection of fencing
on the premises at 19 Muzzey Street, which is within the Battle Green District.
Participating in this decision were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Georgia
H. Williams, Donald J. Shaw, S. Lawrence Whipple, and Associate Commissioner
Amalie G. Samoylenko.
It was moved, seconded, and unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate of
Appropriateness to Lexington Enterprises, Inc, (Peking Gardens) with respect
to changes in the building at 27 Waltham Street, which is within the Battle
Green District, Participating in this decision were Commissioners Wilbur M.
Jaquith, Georgia H. Williams, Donald J. Shaw, S. Lawrence Whipple, and Asso-
ciate Commissioner Amelia G. Samoylenko.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:30 P.M.
