A meeting of the Historic Districts Commission xas held on Wednesday,
Augast 1, 1973, in the Selectmen•a !leeting Room, Town Office Building, I,ex•.
ington. Prosent were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Chairman; Philip B.
Parsons, Secretary; Georgia H. W3173.ams; ind Associate Commissioners Royston
T. Daley and S. Lawrence Whipple. Mr. Daley xas appointed to serge for Com-
missioner Donald J. Shaw xho was enable to be present and Mr. Whipple xas
appointed to serve far Commissioner Thomas J. Holzbog xho was unable to be
present.
A hearing was held at 7:45 P.M. on the application of Robert Petersen
d/b/a Colonial Stores, Inc. for a Certificate of Appropriateness with re-
spect to the erection and display of a sign for the store at 1749 Massachu~
setts Avenue, xhich is within the Battle Green District. l~r. Jaquith read
the legal notice and appLiaation. Mr. Petersen submitted three drawings of
the proposed sign and txo photographs of the store front. The sign is to be
the same height as the sign on the ad3aoent store (Melting Pot International)
and is to consist of bleak letters on a white, matte finished alumi.mxm baak•-
board. The border is to be of trashed gold, anodised aluminum casing. The
sign will be made by Marahant and Hays~rard Sign Compar~Y of Acton who have made
many of the signs in Concord where the original Colonial Stores, Inc. is
located. After discussion, it xas recommended that the xord "Inc." be elimi~
Hated from the xording. It was stated that the Bening Bold serif letters of
Colonia]. Stores would dominate the sign. Mr. Daley suggested that Plain
Bening letters for the lower ease letters of the words "Cosmet3es, Jewelry,
Handbags" would be harmonious with the bolder letters of the upper line and
would occupy the saws spading as on the submitted drawings. The hearing was
closed at 843 P.M.
It was moved, seconded, and unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate of
Appropriateness to Robert Petersen d/b/a Colonial Stores,. Ina. for the area-
tide and display of a sign for the store at 17°9 Massaohusetts Avenue, which
is within the Battle Green District. Participating in this decision were
Commissioners Wilber M. Jaquith, Philip B. Parsons, Georgia H. Williams, and
Associate Commissioners Royston T. Daley and S. Lawrence Whipple.
It was moved, seconded, and unanimously VOTED to disapprove the applica~
tide of Melvin W. Zolot and 1Qorman Garber, Trustees of Mel*Nor Realty Trust,
far a Certificate of Appropriateness xith respect to eacterior arahiteatural
changes in the building at 1049 Massachusetts Avenue, xhioh is within the
East Village District, for lack of prosecut3,on and without pre~dice far a»y
similar application at a later date. Part3.oipating in this decision were
Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Philip B. Perseus, Georgia H. Williams, and
Associate Commissioners Royston T. Daley and S. Lawrence Whipple.
An adjourned hearing xas bald at 8x45 P.M. xith Amelia G. Samoylenko,
Trustee of The Lexington Mews Trust, with respect to the building now befng
erected at 1012 Mnzzey Street and with respect to the ereat3.on and display
of signs on said building.

Ids. Samoylsnko submitted a draining far the sign for Lois I~rast d/bfa
Lola Ernst Assoaiatea, Realtors. The sire of the sign would be reduced to
30"x24" from the previously submitted draxinga for a 36"x36" sign. The
letters for the words "Lois &rnst Assoaiatea" would be 4" capital, letters
and the letters for the word "Rsaltox'a" would be 3" capital letters. The
height of the bottom of the s#,gn would, be no lase than 466" t`rom the side
walk level and the sign is to be centered vertically in the spas between
the doorway easing and the daatsspout. The wood panel of the sigx~rackboard j
is to be finished in a ds~rk broom stain and the incis~l letters are to be ~

finished in gold leaf.

material which would be spaced along the grass planted. areas and brink paving
to the store entrance on Mu$sey Street. Ths placement of a directory sign
in the brick paving area near the ~asi.n Massey Street sntranae was discnaaed.
The sign would consist of 5" aLrts which would drop into side slots and be
bolted in pleas. The oommissian ~mbera quest3.oned the lm?ight of the sign
and the mxmber of slats required. In the interest of a smaller sign, Mrs.
Samoylenko agreed to eliminate directory signs for the stores with signs on the
Mnmssy Street elevation of the building. Stores using the gallery, basement.
and parking lot elevation would remain on the directorq sign. After discussion
of plans for a sign for the "Maws Art Cinema", the commission gave an informal

approval fora sign for the "Dews Art Cinema" so that the sign order can be
placed. As outlined by Mrs. Samoylenko, the sign for the Cinema Nil]. con•
scat of a matte finish background in reddish brown color with 10" raised
good, gold leaf letters xith exterior gooa®neok lights. The "attractions
cabinet" sign Hill be of white Lexar? xith clear plexiglas letter bars de-
signed for 8" letters. The use of irx3ividual lights or continuous fluo-
rescent lighting will be determined later, The oval "Mews" signs for the
main doorti~ay entrances xere discussed. The xords "at the" were eliminated
and it xas decided. that informal approval could be given for signs using
the xord "Mexs" centered on the oval. and having letters of a uniform styl®.
It xas moved, seconded, and unanimously YOZED to issue a Certificate
of Appropriateness to Amelia G. Sasloylenko et ale, Trustees of The Lexing-
ton Mews Trost, with respect to exterior architectural changes 3.n the
building now being erected at 10-12 Muzsey Street, which is xithin the
Battle Green District. Participating in this decision xere Commissioners
