The Historic Districts Commission ~t on Wednesday, July 18, 1973. At
?:~5 P.M. outside the Selectmen~s Meet~l.ng Roam, Toxn Office Building, Wilbur
M. Jaquith, Chairman, said, "I hereby ad3ourn all hearings scheduled for the
Selectman`s Meeting Room on July 1$, 1973 'fa be heard in Room G~15, Town Of-
fice Building". Present were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Chairman=
Philip B. Parsons, Secretary= Donald J. Shaw; Georgia H. Williams; and Asso-
mate Commissioners S. Lawrence Whipple and Royston T. Daley. The Chairman
appointed Mr. Whipple to serve for Commissioner Thomas J. Hol~bog who xas
unable to be present.
Two hearings were bald at 8s00 P.M, Mr. Jaquith read the legal notice
and the application for the erection and display of signs for Chung K, and
Sarah Kim d/b/a House of Kim at 7 Mariam Street and Donald M. Rove d/b/a
Music Alley at 21-23 Depot Square, which are within the Battle Green Dis-
trict. Mr. Carl Severo of I~tal Letters Corporation submitted three scale
drawings of each sign. Mrs. Kim was also present. Mr. Severo said fleet the
sign for House of Kim world be 8'8" in length and the sign for Music Alley
would be 13• in length. The hearings were closed at 8ii0 P.M.
Mr. Daley said that he had been in Wickford, Rhode Island, which is
part of North Kingston, and that the main street in lined on both sides with
colonial, houses. Ile said that only one of the pauses has alumirnun siding
and that it is quite obvious from across the street.
Mr. Whipple said that the Ataarioan gas station i.n Concord between Mariam
Corner and the Antiquarian Society has a very attractive woad sign with Bald
lettering and that he would like to see similar signs in Lexington.
It was moved, seconded, and unanimDUS1y VOTED to issue a Certificate of
Appropriateness to Chung K. and Sarah Kim d/b/a House of Kim for the erec-
tion and display of a sign for the store at 7 Mariam Street, which is within
the Battle Green District. Participating in this decision were Commissioners
Wilbur M. Jaquith. Phil3.p B. Parsons, Donald J. Shaw, Georgia H. Williams,
and Associate Commissioner S. Lawrence Whipple.
It was moved, seconded, and unanimously YOTED to issue a Certificate of
Appropriateness to Donald M. Raun dib/a Music Alley for the erection and
display of a sign for the store at 21-23 Depot Square, which is within the
Battle Green Districet. Participating in this decision were Commissioners ,
Wilbur M. Jaquith, Philip B. Parsons, Donald J. Shaw, Georgia H. Williams,
and Associate Commissioner Lawrence Whipple.
Hearings were held at 8s 25 P.M. on the applications of Vincent Frawmeni
djb/a Le2d.ngton Maws Cinema= Jean-Alain Dupon d/b/a Le Bellecour Rsstanrant;
Alice Iwasa d/b/a Mother Earth Natural Foods= Marius Darrow dib/a Little
Professor Book Centers, Inca and Lois Ernst Associates, Realtors, for the
erection and display of signs for the building at 1012 l~sey Street, which

is within the Battle Green District. Mr. Jaquith read the legs,], notice att.
application. Amelia G. Samoylenko, Trustee of The Lexington McTrs, and
Herbert Eisenberg, Architect, represented the applicants. Excsept for the
Cinema sign, the signs are to be of dark brown stained xood with incised
carved gold leaf letters. Is Bellecour Restaurant sign is to be the first
sign on Hussey Street, a 16" sign with 8" letters of two panels over the
first txo bay windoxs, and to be flush against the xood panels. The Little
Professor Book Center sign is to be on the parking lot elevation, have an
18" panel, 3" letters for the words "Little Professor", aril 8" letters for
the words "Book Center". The sign for A~bother Earth Natural Foods will be
similar to the above txo signs. The sign for Lois Ernst Associ.atea, Real-
tors, is to be a 3' x 3' sign beside the door as that office is to be up-
stairs and it Tres decided that the center of the sign should be at least
4' shave ground level. Then followed considerable discntssion on the sign
for the Lexington Mews Cinema. The words "Lexdngton Mews Cinema" are to be
raised letters on a dark brown stain metal backboard acrd below that would
be either two shorter rows or one long rox of back lighted fluorescent meta].

above the sign. It was decided that new draxings should be submitted for
that sign. The hear3.ngs were ad3ourned at 10e25 P.M.
An ad3ourned hearing on the exterior Roof Plar?s of Ths Lexington Mexs
was held at 30x25 P.M. Mr. Eisenberg said that three air conditioning units
and a kitchen exhaust fan have been added to the roof and that all units
are 4' in height and will not exceed any of the pitched roofs. The members
of the Commission approved installation of these additional roof units on
the flat roof. Samples of txo lights were submitted, three to be on the
Muzzey Street elevation and three on the parking lot elevation. The light
preferred by Mrs. Samoylenko and the members of the Commission i.s Prescow
light Landscape Light X902. Mrs. 3amflylenko said that a 4" x 4" champered
wood post with light o» top might be desired for the front entrance. The
size lights and the post light ware all approved. It wee stated that the
fence oa the parking lot elevation had been removed and a cement walk with
granite curbing had been installed and that a bicycle reek will be installed
there. It was stated that the Town will resurface the Mnszey Street side
walk Trith either blacktop or concrete but not with a brick walk. Shrubbery
will be installed in three areas in front of the bnildir>g acrd, if approved
by the Board. of Appeals, a standing Directory sign will be installed in the
center shrubbery area. The hearing Tres adjourned at 11:1++ P.M.
A hearing was held at iit15 P.M. on the application of The Lezington
Mews Trust for txo Directory signs for the building at 10-12 Muzzey Street
which is within the Battle Green District. Mr. Jaquith head the legal no-
tice and application. Mrs. Samoylsnko said that the signs would be 3' wide
by 5' high and double Paced xith sma11 removable name plates. The hearing
was adfourned at 1is50 P.M.

Mr. Jaquith stated that he hoped June Augusta's laxyor xonld attemt
the August 1st mooting, He said that the Bartolottis plan to submit an
application for a Certifioate of Appx'opriatsnesa. He said that Volunteer
Flooring had maned oat of the building at 7'03-705 Massachusetts Avenue
and that the signs have boon removed.
Mr, Jaquith submitted three bills; .Barbara Gilson, Clerk, for June
1973 for $145.05 (postag®~ $1.05; hearings and mee s ~ $39.00; and
clerical services - $108.00); Ingalls Stationers fo21,77; and Joseph
Hitrosser $36.00 for photographs. It xas moved, seconded, and unanimously
VOTED to approve payment of those bills.

respect to the erection and display of a sign for s store at 10.12 Mns$ey
Street, xhich is xithin the Battle Green District. Participating in this
decision wore Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Philip H. Parsons, Donald J.
Shax, 4eorgia H. Wi111ams, and Associate Commissioner S. Laxrence Whipple.
Then followed a very brief discussion on the lox income hoaxing pror
posed for construction on land oxned by St. Brigid•s Church. Mr. Whipple
maned that the Chairman vse his discretion as to whether or not to xrita
