HCSTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION
A meeting of the Historic Districts Commission was held on Thursday,
June 1, 1972. At the request of the Town Manager the meeting was adjourned
from Room G15, Town Office Building, Lexington to the Selectmen's Meeting
Room, Town Office Building, Lexdngton. Present were Commissioners Wilbur
M. Jaquith, Chairman; George E. Graves; Donald J. Shaw; and Associate Com-
missioners Albert T. Pitt and S. Lawrence Whipple. Mr. Pitt was appointed
to sit for Philip B. Parsons who was unable to be present and Mr. Whipple
was appointed to sit for Geoxgia H. Williams who was unable to be present.
It was moved, seconded, and unanimously VOTED that Mr. Graves serve as Sec-
retary Pro Tem. Also present was Mrs. Judith Uhrig of 15 Vine Brook Road,
representing the League of Women Voters Observer Corps.
A hearing was held at 7150 P.M. on the application of Keith W. and
Marilyn M. Harrison for a Permit for Demolition or Removal of the garage at
the rear of the property at 72 Waltham Street and far a Certificate of Ap-
propriateness for blacktopping said rear pram' es. Mr. Jaquith read the i
legal notice and application. Mr. Harrison part of the Board of Appeals
Permit of January 4, 1972, submitted a sketch by Miller & Nylander showing
plot plan, and photographs of the house and garage. The Board of Appeals, ~
in granting permission for the property to be used for business purposes, ~
required that five parking places in the rear and two on the south side of
the building be installed. Mr. Harrison said that at the Board of Appeals
meeting the neighbors stated objections to having an "asphalt jungle" in
that area and would like to have the large tree in the rear of the property ~
preserved. He submitted three scale drawings showing the house, garden,
lawn, tree, and proposed six parking spaces; four in the rear and. two on the i
side. He also submitted one drawing of a slat fence proposed and three i
drawings of proposed planting. The fence is to be 2/3rds on their boundary
line and 1/3rd on the Orcutts property which is to the rear on Vine Brook
Road and then the fence turns the corner. They propose to use a Butternut
Brown stain by Cabot on the fence and the existing frame which is white will
be stained the same Butternut Brown. Mr. Jaquith asked if there was any
possibility of renting the upstairs, and Mr. Harrison said that the Board of
Appeals had specified that the upstairs could not be rented. Mrs. Uhrig was
asked if she had any comments and she said one, "save the tree". The hear- i
ing was adjourned at 9+55 P.M.
i An informal meeting was held with Roger Zorn of 10 Tavern Lane who sub-
mitted an application for erection of an open deck on his dwelling which is
in the Munroe Tavern District. He also submitted plot plans showing the
location of the proposed deck and sketches SK156, SK157, and 5K158.
Mr. Jaquith submitted a bill from Barbara Gilson, Clerk, for May 1972
for $67.65 ($66.25 for clerical services and $1.40 for postage). It was
moved, seconded, and unanimously VOTED to approve payment of this bill.

HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION - 2 June 1, 1972
Mr. Jaquith then stated that there was a problem re hearing and meetr
ing rooms. Since Room G15 is the only large meeting room, all future hear-
ings will be held in the Selectmen's Meeting Room so that Room G15 will be
available for other groups that might need it. If we reserved Room G15 for
hearings and another large group requested the room, the Commission would
not be permitted to hold its hearings in that room as happened this evening.
Mr. Jaquith stated that Minute Man Park Realty Trust is still working
on the problem of windows. They have found an 8" x 8" bullseye window with
doors to be made in New Orleans. This would reduce the number of lights
from $ to 4. The hardware is to be of brass.
Tie meeting was adjourned at 1Ot14 P.M.
