HISTORIC DIS7RICT3 COMMLSSION
The Historic Districts Commission held a meeting on Thursday, Septem~
ber 16, 191, in Cary Hall of the Cary Memorial Building, Lexington. Prsa••
ent were Commisaionsrs Wilbur M. Jaquith, Chairmani Philip B. Parsons, Secs
retaryi Donald J. Shari Georgia H. Williamsi and Associate Commissioners
George W. Emery, Albert T. Pitt, and S. Laxrence Whipple. Mr. Emery xaa
appointed to serve for George E. Graves who was unable to be present.
Mr. Jaquith stated that the Lexington Medical Center Building Assoc
dates, Ina. had withdxaxn their application for a Certificate with respect
to the erection of fencing on the premises at 16 Clarke Street and that
therefore the hearing scheduled for 7130 P.M. xas cancelled.
An adjourned hearing xas held at 7140 P.M. on the application of The
Old Lexington Restaurant, Inc. xith respect to their sign. The name "Mario*s"
has bean moved and the xorda "Italian .Restaurant" have been added to the
top sign. The Board of Appeals considered the original sign a 5' sign and
xould not permit the secorxl loxer sign. The h®aring was ad3ourned at 8tig PM.
A hearing was held at 8115 P.M. on the application of Cardinal Assow
ciatsa, Inc. for a Certificate xith respect to the erection and display of a
sign on the premises at 1632 Massachusetts Avenue, Which is within the qtr
tle Green District. Mr. Jagt~i.th read the legal notice and the application
for the Certificate. Bette Tagen snbadtted three scale draxinga of the prow
posed sign, The building is painted yellox and the individual letters Would
be painted '61ack on the building :nd the cardinal bird Would be in red to
match the colors of the bird. Ths hearing was elesed at 8122 P.M.
A hearing Was held at 8130 P.M. on the application of Joseph Trani Ins
corporated fora Certificate With respect to exterior architectural changes
in the banding at 1775r1775A Massachusetts Avenue, Which is within the Hates
tle Green District. Mr. Jaquith read the legal notice and the application
Fora Certificate. Mr. Trani submitted three scale drawings of the pre-
posed changes Which consist of a 14• one story addition at the rear of the
building with a door entrance for the upstairs offices on the aide of
the
building. There Would be tyro rood doors and one anodised aluminma door
with glass matching in style the door in the front of the building. The
windows would have permanent wood muntins and all trim Would be painted
white. The hearir~ was closed at 9100 P.M.
John MacNeil, Truates of the property at 15-19 Depot Square, came into
the hall aril said that he hoped the Historic Districts Commission will ens
force roles set forth in the Aot.
A hearing xaa held at 9103 P.M. on the application of Robert J. Chaps
man of li Joseph Road, Which 1s Within the East Yillage District, for a
change in Dolor of the house. Mr. & Mrs. Chapman were present and submitted
a color sample, "Rusti.c Broom", and photographs of the house. They said it
Was a shingle house that Was originally stained but had bean painted over so
that the brown stain bleeds through the exist3.ng gray paint. They rich to
paint the house brown so that the bleeding through will not shox. There is
no trim arbd no blinds on the house but there are alumimim combination Windows.

Mr. Chapman stated that Francis B. McNamara, Jr. of 9 Joseph Road has
the same problem with his house. He said that Mr. McNamara was unable to
ba promsent this evening to discuss his application for a Certificate to
change the color of his house to a red color in place of the existing light
gray Dolor. A color sample, "Viking Red", was submitted to the Commission.
Mr. Chapman stated that the trim of the house will remain white as it is.
Following adjournment of the above two hearings, it was moved, seer
ceded, and unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate to Robert J. Chapmian.
Participating in this decision w®re Commissioners Wilber M. Jaquith' Philip
H. Parsons, Donald J. Shaw, Georgia H. Williams, and Associate Commissioner
George W. Emmery.
It was moved, seconded, and unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate
to Francis H. McNamara, Jr. Participating in this decision were Commia~
sioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Philip B. Parsons, Donald J. Shaw, Georgia H.
Williams, and Associate Commissioner George W. Emory.
It was moved,. apconded, and unanimously YOTED to issue a Certificate
to Cardinal Associates, Inc. Participating in this decision w®re Commie-
sioners Wilber M. Jaquith, Philip B. Parsons, Donald J. 3hax, Georgia H.
Williams, and Associate Commissioner George W, Emery.
It was moved, seconded, and unanimously YOTED to issu®a Certificate
to Joseph Trani Incorporated. Participating in this d®cision mere Commi.s~ li
sioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Philip B. Parsons, Donald J. Shaw, Georgia H.
Williams, and Associate Commissioner George W. Emery.
Agr. Jaquith stated that he had sent a letter to Anthony"s Restaurant
stating that, if they submitted new drawings, the Commission would approve
the rear signs. He had received an extension to September 22nd frown them.
Mr. Jaquith stated that Kenneth A. King had called him regarding the
door at 8 Wallis Court approved by Certificate No. 71 CW26 issued August
25. 1971. Mr. King stated that. he cannot get the door in because the. porch
roof is too low and also that h1s insurance agent had told him that the
porch is unsafe, He now wishes to bei].d out and Mr. Jaquith said that a
new hearing will.. be scheduled and advertized.
