The Historic Districts Commission held a meeting at 730 P.M. on Taes
day, September 14, 1971, in the Bird Room of the Cary Memorial Building
Lexington. Present were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Chairman; Philip
B. Parsons, Secretary; George E. Graves; and Associate Commissionera George
W. Emery, Albert T. Pitt, and S. Lawrence Whipple.
Mr. Jaquith stated that he had received an extension to September 24,
1971 from the Minute Man Park Realty Trust and that the four elevations as
revised are to appear 3.n the September 16th issue of the Lexington Minute«
Man newspaper. A hearing on this application has been scheduled for 714,5 PM
on Taesday, September 21st, in the Bird Room. He requested that the members
of the Commission be available to meet on Thursday, September 23rd, to make a
determination on this application.
Mr. Jaquith stated that the application of the Lexington Medical Cen-
' ter Building Associates, Inc. for the erection of a fence on the premises
at 16 Clarke Street which was advertized for hearing on Thursday, September
16th was being withdrawn.
Mr. Jaquith stated that the Commission had issued a Certificate for the
sign for The Old Lexington Restaurant, Inc., but the Board of Appeals is cones
sidering this a 5' sign and also as tyro signs so they will hold a hearing on
this sub3ect.
Mr. Jaquith stated that he had received an extension on the application I!
of Anthony`s Restaurant to September 22nd. The letters of the word "Restauw
rant" are il" high fastened to a 2" bar and would be 9~g" in length. The
letters can be reset on a new base and moved closer together to reduce the
sign to about 8'3". The distance from the "s" of the word "Anthony's" to
the end of the wall is 7'4". Mr. Shaw suggested that the Commission tell
them this would have to be disapproved. Mr. Jaquith said that he was ready
to approve the word "Anthony`s" even though the letters are surrounded by a
narrow neon bard Mr. Parsons said that he thought the sign was well done]
Mr. Shaw stated that he liked t~ and did not think the sign objectionable;
Mr. Whipple said that he liked it; and Mr. Emery said that he dislik®s it.
1~. Jaquith said that he feels information given the Commission earlier is
not correct, that there is only 7"4" to corner of building, and that 8'3"
will be needed even with letters squeesed together. The following possibiW
lities were discusseda
1. Smaller letters for the word "Restaurant" and put and®r
the "s" or beside the letter "s" to corner of building
2. Put belo~r window • it was asked if this would make it a
second sign and the answer was probably
3. Put vertical which would make a 6• sign, probably illegal
4. Fut between the window and the corner of the building
5. Put above Anthony`s which would make it more than a 3•
high sign and thus would probably make it illegal.

Then. followed a discussion eonoerning the proposed Central Block as
currently designed. It was stated that the piers would go all the way up
the building. The windows for the apartments xovld be wood double hung
sash windawa with 6 aver 6 lights for the second floor and 3 aver 6 lights
for the third floor. The windows on the ground floor world be metal rem
ceased 1~ and there would be no wiridawa around the doors which would be re-
ceased 3•. There xould be a wooden entrance door on Mariam Street. The
building would still base dogs on the Mariam Street. and Depot Square eleva»
tions. The building would have a gray slate roof
with popper gutter proms
~ected out with internal dawnapouts. The building would be of red water
struck brink and the sash and wood trim. would be painted whits. Tha store
signs would be gilded wood letters in various letter styles on a white wood
backboard. There would be brick sidewalks with trees and ornamental plant,+Y
era inconformity with the overall street beautification ,plan of the Town.
