MINUTES OF A MEETING HELD ON DECEM~R 2, 197(?
The Historic Districts Camaci.ssion held a meeting on Wednesday, December
2, 1970, in the Bird Roam of the Cary Memorial Building, Lexington. Present
were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Chairman; Philip B, Parsons, Secretary;
George E. Graves; Max H. Straw= Georgia H. Williams; and Associate Commis-
sinner George W. Emory.
A hearing was held at 7:32 P.M, on the application of Daniel C. Yuill,
D.M.D. for a Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to the erection,
display, and maintenance of a free standing sign for the premises at 20 Muzzey
Street, which is within the Battle Green District. Mr. Jaquith read the let-
ter requesting the hearing and the legal notice of this hearing, and also the
' Permit issued by the Board of Appeals for said sign. Present for the peti-
tioner was Dr. Yuill who submitted three sketches and a photograph of the sign.
Following discussion, the hearing was ad3ourned at 7;45 P.M.
Mr, Jaquith withdrew and it was moved, seconded, and unanimously VOTED
that Mr. Straw serve as Chairman Pro Tem. Mr. Emery was appointed to serve
for Mr. Jaquith who was unable to sit on the following adjourned hearing.
An ad~aurned hearing was held at 7x45 P.M. with respect to the submission of
"a detailed description of the lighting fixture proposed to be installed over
the night depository on the franc elevation of the building and a detailed
description of the two»lamp parking area lighting fixture to be installed at
the easterly end of the rear elevation" of the Harvard Trust Company building
at 1761.1765 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle Green. District.
Peter Steffi.an of Steffian, Steffian and Bradley, Architects, represented the
Harvard Trust Company and submitted one scale drawing showing the ].ovation of
the two fixtures and a sample of each of the two Lights proposed in accordance
with exception 2. of Certificate of Appropriateness No. 70 C~10 dated April
29, Sg70. The fixture proposed for the front elevation is a cylindrical wall
bracket down light, five inches in diameter, and of a matte black finish,
(Prescolite ,~FC200-452}, The fixture proposed for the rear elevation is a
double headed matte blank exterior area light by Stonco or equal. Following
discussion, it was moved, seconded, and unanimously VOTED to approve the two
lights to be installed. Participating in this decision were Commissioners
Max H. Straw, Philip B. Parsons, George E. Graves, Georgia H. Williams, and
Associate Cammi.ssioner George W. Emery.
Mr. Jaquith stated that an extension to January 23, 1971 had been re-
ceived from Gray G. and LaRue Howell Henry for the driveway at 11 Hancock
Street.

Mr. Jaquith submitted three bills as fo7lowst Barbara Gilson, Clerk,
far $61.10 for clerical services and postage; Hancock Press for $31.26 for
1000 Certificates of Appropriateness; and Hancock Press far $149.57 for 1$00
stamped envelopes (500 large and f00fl small). It was moved, seconded, and
unanimously VOTED to approve payment of these bills.

A hearing was held at 8e15 Y.M. on the application of Ora Realty Trust
by Robert 0. Tillinghast for a Certificate of Appropriateness with respect
to the completion of a garage-type building at 465-475 Massachusetts Avenue
and the application fn^ a Permit for Demolition or Removal of the existing
garage on said premises, which is xithin the East Village District. Mr.
Jaquith read the letter requesting tze hearing and the legal notice of this
hearing and then briefly reviewed the background of this property and actions
taken in 1968. Present for the petitioner was Robert 0. Tillinghast who sub-
mitted plans of the proposed building. Also present were: Donald E. Nickerson,
Chairman of the Board of Appeals who are holding a hearing on this proposal
on December 15th;. Ilda Forbush of 445 Massachusetts Avenue; Frank J. and
Pauline H. Clare of 443b Massachusetts Avenue; Norman, Carl, and Robert Dolan
of 443a Massachusetts Avenue; and Florence Gray of 488 Massachusetts Avenue.
Following discussion by the Commission with Mr. Tillinghast, the chair opened
the hearing to those abettors present, all of whom expressed opposition to
the building proposed. The hearing was closed at 9135 P.M.
It was moved, seconded, and unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate of
Appropriateness to Daniel C. Yuill, D.M.D. for a free standing sign on the
premises at 20 Muzzey Street. Participating in this decision were Commis-
sioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Philip B. Parsons, George E. Graves, Max H. Straw,
and Georgia H. Williams.
Mr. Jaquith stated that a metal awning had been installed over the front
entrance of the property at 917 Massachusetts Avenue and that the owner, June
C. Augusta, would be requested to appear at a meeting of the Commission on
December 9th to discuss this installation and also to discuss the fencing on
said property.
