HomeMy WebLinkAbout1970-10-28 HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION MINUTES OF A MEETING HELD ON OCTOffi2 28, 1970 The Historic Districts Commission held a meeting on Wednesday, October 28, 1970, in the Bird Room of Cary Memorial Building, Lexington. Present were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Chairman; Philip B. Parsons, Secretary; George E. Graves; Max H. Straw; and Associate Commissioner George W. Eatery. Mr. Emsry was appointed to serve for Georgia H. Williams who was unable to be present. A hearing was held at 7x30 P.M. on the application of Gray G. and LaRue Howell Henry fora Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to the in- stallation of a driveway for the dwelling at li Hancock Street, which is within the Hancock-Clarke District. Mr. Jaquith read the legal notice and the letter requesting the hearing. Present for the petitioner was LaRue H. Henry who submitted three scale drawings of a plot plan showing location of the dwelling on the property and the proposed location of the driveway. Fol~ lowing discussion, the hearing was adjourned at 8115 P.M. until November 4. A hearing was held at 8:17 P.M. on the application of R.H.D. Realty & Development Company, d/b/a Battle Green Inn and Lexington`s Drummer Boy Res» taurant with respect to the erection and display of ~ awning with signs for the Restaurant at 1720-1722 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle Green District. Mr. Jaquith read the legal notice and letter requesting the hearing. Present for the petitioner were Michael E. Neustadt, General Man- agar, and Bradford W. Bigham of Bigham & Sons, Inc., Awnings, who submitted drawings of the proposed awning and the front of the building showing pro- posed location of the awning, menu shaiti.ng proposed logo, postcard showing the building, and color sample of the awning to be installed. Following disc cession, the hearing was adjourned at 9e30 P.M. An adjourned hearing was held at 9130 P.M. on the application of Parkway Distributors Inc. d/b/a Big L Discount Stores with respect to the erection and display of a sign for the store. front at 1$~'O Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle Green District. Martin Ca of Mandeville Signs was present far the petitioner and submitted three scale drawings of the. proposed sign. Following discussion, the hearing was adjourned at 1Ot00 P.M. Mr. Jaquith read the Board of Appeals Denial on the application of Colo- nial Pharmacy for the sign for the store at 1754 Massachusetts Avenue, for which the Commission had held a hearing on July 1,5, 1970. It was moved, seconded, and unanimously VOTED to deny the application of Colonial Pharmacy. Participating in this decision were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Philip B. Parsons, George E. Graves, Max H. Straw, and Associate Commissioner George W. Eatery. r HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMt~SSION - 2 - October 28, 1970 Mr. Jaquith stated that no plot plan had been received with respect to the application of Anthony J. & Marie Bartoiotti and Joseph & Ersilia Bartolotti for an addition to the dwelling at 1132 Massachusetts Avenue and that in a telephone conversation he had been told that they wished to i+rith- draw the application until a later date. It was moved, seconded, and unani- mously VOTED to deny without prejudice this application. Participating in this decision were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Philip B. Parsons, George E. Graves, Max H. Straw, and Associate Commissioner George W. Emery. An adjourned hearing was held on the application of the Theatre Pharmacy, Inc. with respect to the erection of a screening fence for the rear of the store at 1784 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle Green District. Fallowing discussion, it was moved, seconded, and unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate of Appropriateness to the Theatre Pharmacy, Inc. Participating in this decision were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Philip B. Parsons, George E. Graves, Max H. Straw, and Associate Commissioner George W. Emery. It was moved, seoonded, and unanimously VOS~D to issue a Certificate of Appropriateness to R.H.D. Realty & Development Company d/b/a Battle Green Inn and Lexington's Drummer Boy Restaurant with respect to the erection and dis- play of an awning and signs painted on it for the restaurant at 1722 Massa- chusetts Avenue. Participating in this decision were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Philip B. Parsons, George E. Graves, Max H. Straw, and Associate Comte missioner George W. Emery. Mr. Jaquith stated that Franklin G. Hudson had informed him that he was resigning as an Associate Commissioner due to his pending move from Lexington. Mr, Jaquith stated that he had received an application for a Certificate of Appropriateness and for a Permit for Demolition from Robert Tillinghast with respect to the property at 465-4?5 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the East Village District, and that the hearings on these applications would be scheduled for Wednesday, December 2, 1970.
