HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION
MINIITES OF A MEETING HELD ON OCTOBER 14, 1970
The Historic Districts Commission held a meeting on Wednesday, October
14, 1970, in the rear of Cary Memorial Hall, Cary Memorial Building, Lexing-
ton. Present were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Chairman; Philip B.
Parsons, Secretary; George E. Graves; Max H. Straw; grad Associate Commission-
ers George W. Emery and Franklin C. Hudson.
A hearing was held at 7a90 P.M. on the application of Joseph Trani In-
corporated with respect to architectural changes for the building at 1775-
1775A Massachusetts Avenue and the erection and display of signs on said
building, which is within the Battle Green District. Mr. Emery was appointed
to serve for Georgia H. Williams who was unable to be present. Mr. Jaquith
read the legal notice and letter requesting this hearing. Joseph A. Trani,
Jr., President, was present for the petitioner and submitted three scale
drawings of the proposed changes and photographs of the store front as it is
presently. The hearing was adjourned at 8a15 P.M.
A hearin was held at 8:20 P.M. on the application of Parkway Distribu-
tors Inc. d/b%a/ Big "L" Discount Stores with respect to the erection and
display of a sign for the store front at 1784- Massachusetts Avenue, which is
within the Battle Green District. Mr. Hudson was appointed to serve for M'rs.
Williams who was unable to be present. Martin Calvert of MandeviU.e Signs
was present for the petitioner and submitted three scale drawings of the pro-
posed sign, photograph of the store front, and color samples for the proposed
sign. This hearing was adjourned at 9a~10 P.M. until 9a00 P.M. on Wednesday,
October 28. 1970.
An adjourned hearing was held at Sa45 P.M. on the application of Joseph
A. Busa d/b/a/ Busa's Lexington Flower Shop, with respect to the erection and
display of a sign for the store at 1851 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within
the Battle Green District. Present for the petitioner were Joseph A. Busa
and Wayne Busa who submitted three drawings of the proposed sign. This hear-
ing was adjourned at 8x50 P.M.
Mr. Jaquith read a letter from Donald E. Nickerson, Chairman of the
Board of Appeals, with respect to the sign for Colonial Pharmacy. Mr. Jaquith
stated that the Lexington Savings Bank had applied fora Certificate with
respect to exterior architectural changes and the erection and display of a
sign for the Bank at 1776 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle
Green District, and that the hearing had been scheduled for November 4th.
Mr. Jaquith stated that an application had been received from June C. Augusta
for a Certificate for fencing and a sign at 917 Massachusetts Avenue, which
is within the East Village District, and that tha hearing had been scheduled
for November 4, 1970.

It was moved, seconded, and unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate of
Appropriateness to Joseph Trani Incorporated with respect to changes in the
exterior architectural features of the building at 1775~1775A Massachusetts
Avenue. Participating in this decision were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith,
Philip B. Parsons, George E. Graves, Max H. Straw, and Associate Commissioner
George W. Emery.
It was moved, seconded, and unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate of
Appropriateness to Joseph Trani Tneorporated with respect to the erection
and display of two signs for the building at 177-177SA Massachusetts Avenue.
Participating in this decision were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Philip
B. Parsons, George E. Graves, Max H. Straw, and Associate Commissioner George
W. Emery.
Mr. Jaquith withdrew and it was moved, seconded, and unanimously VOTED
that Mr. Straw serve as Chairman Pro Tem. Mr. Hudson was appointed to serve
for Mr. Jaquith who was unable to sit on the following adjourned hearing and
that Mr. Emery serve for Mrs. Williams who was unable to be present. An ad-
3ourned hearing was held at 10:30 P.M. with respect to the submission of the
"detailed drawing of the metal ornament to be installed in the pediment above
tlse main entrance" of the Harvard Trust Company building at 1761-1765 Massa-
chusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle Green District. Three copies of
a scale drawing were submitted in accordance with exception i. of Certificate
of Appropriateness No. 70 C-10 dated April 29, 1970. The three scale draw-
ings and color samples of the proposed logo were submitted on "Transmittal
Sheet" of Steel-Craft Letter Co. Following discussion, it was moved, sec-
onded, and unanimously VOTED to approve the metal ornament to be installed
in the pedia~nt above the main entrance of the Harvard Trust Company build-
ing. Participating in this decision were .`Commissioners lax H. Straw. Ph31ip
P. Parsons, George E. Graves,. and Associate Commissioners George W. Emery
and Franklin C. Hudson.
It was aioved~ seconded, and unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate of
Appropriateness to Joseph A. Busa, d/b/a/ Busa's Lexington Flower Shop with
respect to the erection, display, and maintenance of a sign for the store at
1851 Massachusetts Avenue. Participating in this decision were Wilbur M.
Jaquith, Philip B. Parsons, George E. Graves, Max H. Straw, and Associate
Commissioner Franklin C. Hudsan.
