HomeMy WebLinkAbout1970-10-01 y • HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION MIN[J2E.S OF A MEETING HELD ON OCTOBER 1, 1970 The Historic Districts Commission held a meeting on Thursday, October 1, 1970, in the Rear of Cary Memorial Hall, Cary Memorial Building, Lexington. Present were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Chairman; George E. Graves; Max H. Straw; Georgia H. Williams; and Associate Commissioner Franklin C. Hudson. Mr. Hudson was appointed to serve for Philip B. Parsons, Secretary, who was unable to be present. It was moved, seconded, and unanimously VOTED that Mrs. Williams serve as Secretary Pro Tem. A hearing was held at 7t45 P.M. on the application of Joseph A. Buse, Lexington Flower Shop~for a Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to the erection and display of a sign for the store at 1851 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle Green District. Mr. Jaquith read the legal notice and letter requesting this hearing. Joseph A. Buss and Wayne Buse represented the applicant and submitted photographs of the proposed sign. The hearing was adjourned at $e00 P.M. until 9e00 P.M. on October 14, 1970. Mr. Jaquith stated that extensions had been received as followst Bartolotti to October 31; Theatre Pharmacy to October 15t and Colonial Phar- macy tc October 15 and that a Board of Appeals hearing on the Colonial Phar- macy sign was scheduled for October 20, 1970. It was stated that Harvard Trust Company would submit a scale drawing for the logo for their building at 1761-1765 Massachusetts Avenue at the October 14th meeting. Mr. Jaquith stated that a letter had been sent to the owner of record of the property at 917 Massachusetts Avenue regardi»g the illegal fencing and sign and that, if an application has not been received by October 14th, this matter will be turned over to the appropriate town officials for action. Mr. Jaquith then read a letter from Dean Nicholson re the staircase at 19 Muzzey ' Street and a letter from Ann E. Weiss of New York City with respect to the advertisement of the Shell Oil Company station at the corner of Maple Street and Massachusetts Avenu®. It was moved, seconded, and Y07~D that the Chairman reply to this letter. A hearing was held at 8x15 P.M. on the application of Modern Gourmet, Inc. with respect to the erection and display of two signs on the building at 27 Waltham Street, which is within the mottle Green District. Mr. Jaquith read the legal notice and letter requesting this hearing. Mrs. Patricia Hagedorn represented the applicant and submitted three scale drawings of each of the proposed signs, photographs of the front and rear of the building where the signs are to be erected, and color samples of the proposed signs. The hearing was adjourned at 9:15 P.M. Michael E. Newstadt, General Manager of the Battle Green Inn, met in- formally with the Commission to discuss the possible erection of an awning with signs over the front entrance of Lexington's Drummer Boy Restaurant. A hearing on this was scheduled ..for October 28, 1970. HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION - 2 ~ October 1, 1970 Mr. Jaquith submitted a bill for $60.90 from Barbara Gilson~Clerk, for secretarial services and expenses. It was moved, seconded, and VOTED to ap- prove payment of this bill. Mr. Jaquith read. a letter from LaRue Henry requesting a Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to the installation of a driveway for the pre- mises at it Hancock Street, which is within the Hancock-Clarke District. A hearing on this application was scheduled for October 28, 1970. Mr. Jaquith then stated that he had written to Walter C. O'Connell, Town Manager, regarding the street light temporarily installed at the Battle Green. It was decided that Mr. Jaquith should discuss this with Mr. O'Connell and inform him that the members of the Commission did not approve of the installa- tion of this style light around the Battle Gr®en. It was moved, seconded, and unanimously YOTED to issue a Certificate of Appropriateness to Modern Gourmet, Inc. with respect to the erection and dis- play of two signs on the building at 27 Waltham Street. Participating in this decision were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, George E. Graves, Max H. Straw, Georgia H. Williams, and Associate Commissioner Franklin C. Hudson. The meeting was adjourned at 11:20 P.M. l ~ J Geora H.
