HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMLSSION
MINUTES OF A I~TING HELD AIRsU3T 5, 1970
The Historic Districts Commission held a meeting on Wednesday,. August
5. 1970, in the Bird Room of the Cary Memorial Hailding, Lexington. Present
were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Chairman; Philip B. Parsons, Secretary;
Max H. Straw; George E. Graves; Georgia H. Williams; and Associate Commis-
sioners George W. Emery; and S. Lawrence Whipple.
An adjourned hearing was held at 7t3.5 P.M. on the application of the
Theatre Pharmacy, Inc. with respect to the .erection. and display of three
signs for the store at 1784 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle
Green District. Present for the petitioner was Christopher Vanier who sub-
mitted. three sets of a wale drawing for the sign proposed for ttws front of
the store and three sets of a scale drawing of the two signs proposed for
the rear of the store. Following discussion, the hearing was adjourned at
8140 P.M.
An informal discussion was held with Mrs. George P. Morey, President,
and Mrs. Ralph Davis of the Lexington Historical Society with respect to re-
painting the Hancock-Clarke House. It was stag that there is no histori-
cal significanoe to the present color and the Society wishes to change the
color to that xhich as closely as possible matches the color of the House in
1775• It was decided that the Society should request in writing a Certifi-
cate of Appropriateness for ohanging the color arsi that the proposed Dolor
should be submitted to the Commission at its hearing on August 19th.
At 9t 15 P.M. an informal discussion was held with Orlando Del Valle,
President-Treasurer of Czar Nicholas and The Toad, Ina. with reset to the
large window in the store at 31 Depot Square which dose not conform to the
Certificate as issued. Mr. Del Valle prsaented a letter from the installer
to the effect that to instal]. the window as specified would have .required
cutting a foist which would have caused the building to collapse. Following
discussion, Mr. Del Valle withdrew. The Commission decided to take this un-
der advisement.
Mr. Jaquith submitted a bill for $68.90 from Barbara Gilson, Clerk, for
expenses and clerical services for July 1970. It was moved, seconded, and
VOTED to approve payment of this bill.
Mr. Jaquith then discussed briefly the four hearings which are sched-
uled for August i9th. Scale drawings of the sign already subani.tted b+y the
Perfection RUGG Co., Inc. for the store at 31 Waltham Street, were shown.

Seasons Four, Inc, for a Free standing sign for the basin®ss located at f265
Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Munroe Tavern District. New plans
for the sign were snbani.tted by Mr. Jaquith.. Fo1l.owing discussion, it was
moved, seconded, and unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate of Appropriate-
ness for the sign plans submitted at the hearing on July 1, 1974. Partici-
pating in this decision were Commissio~rs Wilbur M. Jaquith, Chairman;
Philip B. Parsons, 9earetary; George E. Graves= Marc H. Straw= and Georgia H.
Yilliams.
Following disaussion, it was moved, seconded, and unanimously V4T® to
issue a Certificate of Appropriateness to Theatre Pharmacy, Inc. for the
three signs for the store at 1784 Massaahusetta Avenne. Participating in
this decision were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Chairman: Philip B.
Parsons, Secretary; George E. Graves; Max H. Straw: and Georgia H. Williams.
The meeting was adjourned at 11=1~ P.M.
