HomeMy WebLinkAbout1968-12-03 • 1 HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION MINUTES OF ADJOURNED MEETING HELD ON DECEMBER 3, 1968 The Historic Districts Commission held an adjourned meeting on Tuesday, December 3, 1968, at 7:45 P.M., in the Comptroller' s Office, Town Office Building. Members present were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Chairman, Philip B. Parsons, Secretary, Ruth G. Bevan, George E . Graves and Max H. Straw and Associate Commissioner George W. Emery. An adjourned hearing was held at 7:45 P.M. on the application of Shell Oil Company for a Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to the erection and display of a free standing sign for the premises at 1095 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the East Village District. The Chairman submitted to the Commission new scale drawings of the proposed sign. Recommendations for simplification of the sign made by Commission members were included in the new drawings . After discus- sion, upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate to the applicant. The adjourned hearing was closed at 9:15 P.M. The Chairman read to the members the completed Certificate of Appropriateness for Hancock Congregational Church which had been VOTED at the adjourned meeting held on November 20, 1968. The Certificate will be typed and processed. The Chairman advised that there was not any current business, but that the following applications were pending: First Parish Church extension to 1/15/69 Gulf Oil Company extension to 1/1569 (name plate) In preparation for photographs to be made of business sites and signs within the Battle Green District, the Chairman and Associate Member Emery will view the locations over the weekend. A bill submitted by Clerk, Elizabeth M. Flynn in the amount of $110.91 was presented and upon motion duly made and seconded, it was Voted to process the bill for payment. The next meeting night was not scheduled at this time. The adjourned meeting was adjourned at 9:50 P .M. Philip B. Parsons Secretary r TOWN OF LEXION , 111W Massachusetts 02173 HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS This certificate is issued pursuant to Chapter 447, Acts of Massachusetts, 1956, as amended, to Shell Oil Company _. with respect to the erection and display of a free standing sign, as set forth below, for the premises at 1095 Massachusetts Avenue , which is within the East Village District . The sign is to be suspended from an arm extending southerly from a tapered steel post located at the approximate center of the rear line of the planting area which is in front of the pump island. The plan- ting area is shown on drawing No. 1 bearing the legend "Elevation & Plot Plan of Service Station, Maple St. and Mass . Ave ., Lexington, Mass ." of a set of 5 scale drawings entitled "Shell Oil Company Eastern Marketing Region", dated June 11, 1968, by C . Harry Erickson, Archi- tect, submitted to the Commission at the hearing on June 12, 1968. The sign is to be double-faced, each side to consist of a cast alumi- num shell emblem anodized impgolC6115ing the legend "SFTF'LL" centered on an emblem mounting panel painted a shade of red matching the color sample submitted to the Commission at the adjourned hearing on Novem- ber 13, 1968. Additional details of the design, layout, size and style of the sign, letters, mountings and sign post, the height of sign and sign post appear on or may be scaled from a scale drawing en- titled "Free Standing Double-faced sign for Shell Oil Company Service Station, Maple St . and Mass . Ave . , Lexington, Massachusetts", dated Nov. 26, 1968, by C . Harry Erickson, Architect, submitted to the Com- mission at the adjourned hearing on December 3, 1968. All exposed woodwork of the sign except the emblem mounting panels is to be painted white ; and the sign post, supporting arm, bracket and mountings are to { be painted black; and the ornamental ball at the top of the pole is to be finished in goldpi-Aie The issuance of this Certificate does not constitute evidence of com- pliance with the Sign By-Law or any other By-Law of the Town of Lexington.
