Members present were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Chairman, George F. Graves, Ruth G. Bevan and Max H. Straw and Asso- ciate Commissioner George W. Emery. In the absence of Secretary Philip B. Parsons, upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED that Commissioner George F. Graves serve as Secretary Pro Tempone. Adjourned hearing was held at 7130 P.N. on the application of Frederic K. and Marjorie S. Johnson with respect to a Certificate of Appropriateness for the erection and display of six signs and a wedge bar support for a proposed additional sign for the new retail automo- bile service station building referred to in Certificate of Appropriate- ness No. 68 C-87, issued by the Commission on August 8. 1966, at 39 Bedford Street, Which is within the Battle Green District. After esamin* of the scale drawings submitted to the Commission at the original bearing held on July 31. 1966, upon motion duly made and secon- ded, it was unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate to the applicant. The adjourned hearing was closed at 8135 P.M. Adjourned hearing was held at 9100 P.M. an the application of Robert 0. Tillinghast for a Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to the erection of a two family dwelling at No. 473 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the East Village District. Plans for this dwelling had been submitted to the Commission at the adjourned hearing on August 7, 1968 in a scale drawing and a Plot Plan' on another drawing. Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate to the applicant. The adjourned hearing was adjourned at 9145 P.M. The Chairman dictated a letter to George E., Sr. and Grace F. Rowe advising them that the Commission had approved the installation of lighting fixtures for the dwelling being erected at 1460 Massachu- setts Avenue under Certificate of Appropriateness No. 68 C-16 issued Dray 9, 1968. Bills in the following amounts were presented to the Commission' Hancock Press $90.30 Elisabeth M. Flynn 76.39 Upon motion duly made and seconded it was unanimously VOTED to 14404100111 the bills for payment. The Chairman advised the Commission that extensions are still pending for the First Parish Church, Robert 0. Tillinghast and Frederic X. and Marjorie S. Johnson. At the present time the next meeting night is not scheduled. The adjourned meeting was adjourned at 10115 P.M. George E. HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS This certificate is issued pursuant to Chapter 447, Acts of Massachusetts, 1956, as amended, to Frederic K. and Marjorie S. Johnson withrespectto the erection and display of six signs and a wedge bar support for a proposed additional sign, as set forth below, for the new retail automobile service station building referred to in Certi- ficate of Appropriateness No. 68 C-27 issued by the Commission on August 8, 1968, at 39 Bedford Street, which is within the Battle Green District . The first, second and third signs are all to bear the legend "Gulf" and are to consist of white plastic convex letters approximately 3/4" thick fastened to the brick face of the building with the back of the letters set out from the building not more than 1 1/2" . The style, type, layout and dimensions of the lettering are shown under the heading "20" letters" on drawing No. ER 551 entitled "Gulf Oil Corpo- ration" "Building Letters Dealer Name and Rest Room Signs" , dated 12/20/62 as last revised 7/12/66 submitted to the Commission at the hearing on July 31, 1968. The first sign is to be located on the front elevation of the buil- ding above the sales office window and door as shown on drawing No. ER 430 entitled "Gulf Oil Corporation" , "Brick Colonial Building Plans - Elevations 8, Sections" , dated 3/24/64 as last revised 7/31/67 submitted to the Commission at the aforesaid hearing. The second and third signs are to be located on the northerly and southerly elevations of the building respectively and centered on the respective gables of the building with the bottom of the letters not more than 111 above ground level. The fourth, fifth and sixth signs are to be directional signs for the lavatories in the building. They are to consist of porcelain enamel signs approximately 16" x 6" , the details of which are shown on the aforesaid drawing No. FR 551. Johnson-Page 2 In addition there may be placed on the front elevation of the buil- ding and centered 8" above the lintel of the middle service entrance door a stainless steel wedge bar support 2216" x 2" to be used to support a name sign to be presented to the Commission for approval at a subsequent date . This Certificate does not cover the free standing plastic disc sign bearing the legend "Gulf" now located in the center front of the premises as shown on drawing No. ER-B-603 entitled "Gulf Oil Corpora- tion" "Lexington, T'Tass 39 Bedford St." dated 5/31/62 as revised 7/17/68, submitted to the Commission at said hearing, the application for a Certificate of Appropriateness for said sign having been with- drawn at the hearing by the applicant . The general style, layout, dimensions and certain of the details of the design and materials of the building appear on or may be scaled from a scale drawing entitled "Proposed Two Family Dwelling Unit 473 Mass . Avenue, Lexington, Massachusetts Mr. Robert 0. Tillinghast Owner" , dated July 22, 1968, C . Harry Erickson, Architect submitted to the Commission at the adjourned hearing on August 7, 1968 The location of the building on the premises is the area entitled ' New Two Family Dwelling Unit No. 473 Mass . Avenue" as shown on Plot Plan appearing on drawing entitled "Proposed Restoration of Two Existing Buildings Plus One Barn Rebuilt on Land at 165-475 ' ass . Avenue, Owner Mr . Robert O . Tillinghast" , dated March 4, 1968 revised July 22, 1968, C . Harry Erickson, Architect submitted to the Commission on July 31, 1968 . In addition to the materials specified on the aforesaid building drawing, all clapboards, windows, doors, louver, blinds and trim are to be of wood and all the windows are to have permanent wood muntins except that the sliding door units on the rear elevation of the buil- ding may be aluminum The chimney and chimney cap are to be of red common brick and if constructed of used brick, the bricks are to be well cleaned All roof shingles including those on the front entrance hood are to be black asphalt . All clapboards, downspouts and the louver are to be painted a shade of red to match as nearly as possible the sample of Cape Cod Red submitted to the Commission at the ad- journed hearing on May 8, 1968. All window sash and all trim is to be painted white . Gutters may be painted red to match the clapboards or white at the option of the applicant. All doors except the aluminum sliding doors are to be painted a shade of dark green match- ing as nearly as possible the shade of Hunter House Dark Green sub- mitted to the Commission at the adjourned hearing on May 8, 1968 . Tillinghast-Page 2 The front steps may be of concrete or stone . The front walk is to be of red common brick and if constructed of used brick the bricks are to be well cleaned. No more of the foundation walls are to be exposed than is shown on said building drawing and the exposed part of the walls are to be left in their natural concrete state .
