The Historic Districts Commission met at the time and place specified
in the public notice of hearing on the application for a Certificate of
Appropriateness by Douglas Saunders with respect to the erection and
display of a sign for the store at 852 Massachusetts Avenue, which is with-
in the East Village District.
Members present were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Chairman,
Philip B. Parsons, Secretary, Max H. Straw and George E. Graves, and
Associate Commissioners George W. Emery and Donald B. White.
The Chairman read the letter of application and the notice of hearing.
Mr. Saunders appeared in his own behalf and presented scale drawings of the
proposed sign. The applicant inquired about the installation of a barber
pole. The Chairman advised him that he wished to study previous policy
regarding barber poles and asked that Mr. Saunders return at a later date.
Upon motion duly made and seconded it was unanimously VOTED to issue a
Certificate with respect to the sign to the applicant. No other persons
having appeared the hearing was closed at 8:15 P.M.
Adjourned hearing was held at 8:20 P.M. on the application of Rowe
Chevrolet, Inc . with respect to the erection and display of signs for the
new and altered building referred to in Certificate No. 68 C-2. Upon
motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to issue a Certi-
ficate to the applicant with respect to the sign to be affixed to said
building. New scale drawings for the standing sign were presented and
discussed. Issuance of a Certificate will be made after the Board of
Appeals' decision; The adjourned hearing was adjourned at 8:35 P.M.
Commissioner Straw retired from the meeting at this time. An informal
meeting was held at 8:45 P.M. with Messrs. Norman May, Charles H. Cole, II,
Evert Fowle, Parker Hirtle and Fred Aldrich in regard to the Foley applica-
tion to be heard on February 7, 1968.
The Chairman presented the following bill to the Commission:
Minute Man Publications, Inc. $6.00
Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to approve
payment of the bill. Further motion was made at this time that "the Chair-
man be authorized to approve publication bills without Commis*ion vote";
motion was seconded and unanimously VOTED.
The Clerk was directed to contact Mr. LaRoche of The Pot Shop and
George E. Rowe of Rowe Chevrolet, Inc. with respect to their written re-
quest
e-quest to extend their time limit to March 1, 1968. These must be in the
hands of the Commission by February 5, 1968.
Applications received from Monsignor Casey, Patter of St. Brigid's
Church and Robert L. Lyon will be scheduled for hearing on February 21,
1968.
The next meeting night is scheduled for Wednesday, February 7, 1968
to consider the application of Howard W., Jane A. and Mary H. Foley.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:30 P.M.

CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS
This certificate is issued pursuant to Chapter 447, Acts of Massachusetts, 1956, as amended, to
Robert L. and Delores A. Lyon
with respect to changes in the exterior architectural features
of the building
as noted below, at 55 Naltham Street
which is within the Battle Green District
The architectural features to be changed consist of the installation
of white, baked, enamel, combination, aluminum storm windows and
screens on all elevations of said building except the first floor
bay window of the front elevation, the two westerly second floor
windows of the southerly elevation of the main building and the first
floor and second floor windows of the rear elevation of the main
building.
The style and type of window to be installed are to conform to the
specifications submitted to the Commission at the hearing on
February 21, 1968.
