The Historic Districts Commission met at the time and place specified
in the public notice of hearing on the application for a Certificate of
Appropriateness by The Pet Shop with respect to the erection and display
of two signs for the premises at 42A Bedford Street, which is within the
Battle Green District.
Members present were Commissioners Philip B. Parsons, Secretary, Ruth
G. Bevan and Max H. Straw and Associate Commissioners George W. Emory and
Donald B. White . Chairman, Wilbur M. Jaquith was not present and upon
motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED that Commissioner,
Max H. Straw serve as Chairman Pro Tempore for The Pot Shop and Lexington
Trust Company hearings.
The Chairman Pro Tempore read the letter of application and the notice
of hearing. Mr. LaRoche appeared in behalf of The Pot Shop. He did not
have scale drawings of the signs or photographs of their proposed locations.
He, also, stated that the materials and designs planned were not acceptable
to the Athens Realty Trust Company. Mr. Straw advised him to consult again
with Mr. Passanisi of Athens Realty and to return to the Commission' s next
meeting on January 24, 1968 with completed scale drawings . If this were
not possible, due to the sixty day expiration period requirement, a written
request for extension of time would be necessary. Mr. LaRoche stated that
he would return en January 24th. The hearing was adjourned at 8:00 P.M.
Hearing was held at 8:05 P.M. on the application of Lexington Trust
Company with respect to the erection and display of a sign under the mar-
quee of the Bedford Street elevation of the building at 42 Bedford Street,
which is within the Battle Green District. The letter of application and
the notice of hearing was read. Mr. Raymond Scheublin, President of the
Trust Company, appeared and presented scale drawings of the proposed sign
and a photograph of its location. After discussion, upon motion duly made
and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate to the appli-
cant. No other persons having appeared, the hearing was closed at 8:15 P.M.
Hearing was held at 8:20 P.M. on the application of George E. Rowe and
Grace F. Rowe with respect to changes in the existing building at 33 Bedford
Street and an addition to said building, which is witl}in the Battle Green
District. Chairman Jaquith was present at this time and assumed Chairman-
ship of the meeting. The letter of application and the notice of hearing
was read. George E. Rowe, Sr. and George E. Rowe, Jr. appeared and pre-
sented detailed scale drawings of the proposed changes and the new addition.
The Commission thoroughly studied the plans and upon motion duly made and
seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate to the applicants.
No other persons having appeared, the hearing was closed at 9:10 P.M.
Hearing was held at 9:15 P.M. on the application of Rowe Chevrolet,
Inc. with respect to the erection and display of two signs for the new and
altered building at 33 Bedford Street, which is within the Battle Green Dis-
trict. The Chairman read the letter of application and the notice of hear-
ing. The Messrs. Rowe were present. The first sign was drawn to scale,
but the second was not. Completed scale drawings will be forwarded to the
Chairman for presentation at the January 24, 1968 meeting, at which time
the Commission will act on both signs. The hearing was adjourned at
9:45 P.M. No other persons appeared.

CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS
This certificate is issued pursuant to Chapter 447, Acts of Massachusetts, 1956, as amended, to
George E. Rowe and Grace F. Rowe
with respect to the changes in the existing building and an
addition to said building
as noted below, at 33 Bedford Street
which is within the Battle Green District
The changes consist of the following:
1. The removal of the present gabled roof on the front portion
of the building and the substitution therefore of a flat
roof.
2. The installation on the north elevation of the building of
double aluminum sliding doors with transom, a single wooden
door and a wooden garage door containing 5 panels, of which
, are to be of glass .
3. The installation on the rear elevation of the building of a
wooden garage door of the same design as the garage door
referred to under Paragraph 2 above.
The addition to the existing building is to consist of the erection
of a one story showroom having a gabled roof with cupola in front of
the existing building.
The location of said changes and the addition appear on a scale drawing
entitled "Addition & Alteration To Existing Building For Rowe-Chevrolet
Inc . Bedford Street Lexington, Massachusetts", a scale drawing entitled
"Proposed Elevations of New Show Room and Changes to Existing Building

For Rowe-Chevrolet Inc . Bedford Street Lexington Massachusetts" and a
scale drawing entitled "Proposed Addition and Alteration To Existing
Building For Rowe-Chevrolet Bedford Street Lexington Massachusetts" all
dated November 27, 1967, C . Harry Erickson, Architect, submitted to
the Commission at the hearing on January 17, 1968. The design, layout,
style, dimensions and types of building materials and the details there-
of all appear on or may be scaled from the aforesaid three drawings .
All woodwork including the cupola, louvers and new wooden single door
and garage door on the north elevation, but excluding the wooden door
on the rear elevation, is to be painted white . The existing metal
doors on the north, rear and south elevations and the new wooden door
on the rear elevation are to be painted a shade of red to match as
nearly as possible the red color of the existing brickwork. The color
and texture of all new brickwork is to match as nearly as possible the
existing red bricks. All copper downspouts are to be left in their
natural color. The area between the front of the canopy of the addi-
tion to the building and the sidewalk along Bedford Street is to be
blacktopped, except for space reserved for planting areas in front of
the canopy, which areas may be outlined by blacktop curbing.
The Commission reserves the right to require, at any time within two
years from the date of issuance by the Building Inspector of the Town
of Lexington of an occupancy permit for the aforesaid showroom addi-
tion, the installation of appropriate screening for all structures
erected on the flat roof of the building behind the gabled roof of
the addition.
The issuance of this Certificate does not constitute evidence of
compliance with the Building By-Law or any other By-Law of the Town
of Lexington.

the marquee of the Bedford Street elevation
of the building
as noted below, at 42 Bedford Street
which is within the Battle Green District
The sign is to be double-faced bearing on each side the legend
"BANK" superimposed on a grey arrow and is to be suspended under the
marquee at the end thereof nearest to Worthen Road and centered on
the projection of the marquee from the face of the building.
The design, layout, style, type and size and coloring of the lettering
and the arrow portion of the background and backboard; and method
of suspension of the sign appear on the scale drawing submitted to
the Commission at the hearing on January 17, 1968.

Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to approve
payment of the bills.
The next meeting night is scheduled for Wednesday, January 24, 1968
to consider the application of Douglas Saunders and to meet informally
with representative* of The First Parish Church and the Foley property
located on Harrington Road. A public hearing with respect to the Foley
property is scheduled for February 7, 1968.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:30 P.M.

the store
as noted below, at 852 Massachusetts Avenue
which is within the East Villag® District
The sign is to be located on the Massachusetts Avenue front eleva-
tion of the building on the facia above the window and doorway of
the store. The sign is to bear the legend "Ye Olde Colonial Barber
Shop" with barber pole symbols before the word "Ye" and after the
word "Colonial" painted on a masonite backboard approximately
91 x 30" .
The design, layout, style and size of lettering and symbols appear
en or may be scaled from a drawing by Arlington Sign Service,
Arlington, Mass. submitted to the Commission at the hearing on
January 2L., 1968. The letters of the_sign are to be painted black
shaded with pale blue and the barber pole symbols are to be painted
in alternating red and white stripes . The lettering and symbols
are to be outlined by a gold leaf border and the masonite background
is to be painted white.

dated November 27, 1967 (Revised December 20, 1967) , C. Harry
Erickson, Architect submitted to the Commission at the hearing on
January 17, 1968.
The sign is to bear the legend "Rowe Chevrolet Inc ." . The dimensions,
style, layout and type of lettering appear on or may be scaled from
the aforesaid drawing. The letters are to be of black, rounded plastic
having a glossy finish and affixed to the building as shown on said
drawing.
